I'd be shocked if football isn't dropped sooner rather than later. Good luck recruiting to that dumpster fire. Edsall's last stop.

That will allow them to drop numerous women's sports due to the number of scholarships and will go a long way toward allowing them solvency.

They must maintain 14 sports to remain Division 1 in basketball...so they would only be able to cut one women's sport. Realistically, UConn should just look at Villanova and go "man, we really shouldn't have gotten into the football arms race."

At what point does the NCAA drop that requirement? It seems insane that with so many Universities struggling for cash, they would essentially be forced into maintaining non-revenue generating sports

There are major differences between the two. UConn is a 27,000 student public flagship university. Nova is an 11,000 student Catholic University.

UConn's FB program was horribly managed.

That said UConn would be best served by dropping to FCS as would UMass.

At the point when the big schools, and others who would complain about the competitive balancing issue that losing that requirement would create break off.

Per Scott Springer, Wright State drops softball and men and women’s tennis.

Unless a sport produces significant revenue and public exposure, it should be a club sport.

BGSU is reinstating baseball after receiving $1./M in pledges over the next 5 years (60% of which came from the families of CURRENT PLAYERS...which is a real headscratcher)...but the numbers don't add up. They'll be right back in the same situation in 2023.

By dropping three sports WSU is now down to 11 varsity sports, which is below the requirement of 14 sports required by the NCAA for D1 programs. The NCAA has already determined they will be giving no waivers this year. It will be interesting to see how this develops- do they go DII?

Bolded, my thought too as I read this for three reasons. First, pledges aren't cash. Second, it's a small pool of "player families" for college baseball and most of their sons are only receiving partial scholarships to begin with. Finally, there almost has to be several six figure gifts in the mix to hit that million mark. Unless it's an elite level college baseball program such as LSU or others from the SEC, the sport just doesn't generate major gift support.

Their head coach just retired today, a day after the announcement...sounds like a VERY odd situation.

Money is never free. The coach probably didn't want to have to play certain players based on what Daddy/Mommy donated. I don't blame him.

It just came out in the media today that they are still going to seek a waiver:

Stanford just announced they're dropping 11 varsity sports programs following the 20-21 academic year. Men's and women's fencing, field hockey, men's volleyball, wrestling, lightweight rowing, men's rowing, co-ed and women's sailing, squash, and synchronized swimming are the programs to be cut. They had 36 teams and will drop to 25.

Holy hell, is Stanford the best academic school in the P5?
