Yes, they're located in one of the nicest cities in the U.S. and the weather is second to none but other than that, I just don't see the upside in dealing with the headache with travel, especially for a Southern based G5 conference like the AAC. The Aztecs lack the football and basketball pedigree of Boise State and Gonzaga. If at minimum, they had Fresno State's football record since the breakup of the WAC or even a national championship in basketball like UNLV's (even if it's been 30 years since that championship), maybe and that's a big maybe it would be worth the headache. As part of the Cal State System, they're subject to budget cuts from the state and the UC System schools will always get the lion's share of the budget. Their fanbase is not that solid (to be fair that's a West Coast thing not just a SDSU one) and most importantly, they will always be available since they don't have anywhere else to go. The Pac-12 will never invite a Cal State institution and the Big XII as long as Texas is there will not consider them either. The MWC is their ceiling and they serve a niche in a market that lacks an NFL and NBA team.

I agree to some extent. I only see SDSU leaving for two conferences, the Pac-12 and the Big 12. The Pac-12 is not going to invite SDSU. They don't need them. The Big 12 doesn't really need them, either. While SDSU has the best overall athletic program in the MWC, is the travel worth it for the Big 12 schools in Olympic sports? Probably not. SDSU has been to ten straight bowl games and has had ten straight winning seasons in football. They are 3-3 in football against Boise State, which makes them the one team in the MWC that does not have a losing record against the Broncos.

If the Big 12 wanted to expand to 12 for football, adding SDSU as a "football only" might make sense. If the Big 12 decided to add UCF for "football only" as well, now you are in the Florida and California market for football. They could stay at ten for Olympic sports. Obviously, there would have to be a revenue increase for the Big 12 to make this work. Otherwise, the MWC is the ceiling for SDSU, which may not be the worst thing in the world for them.

Bill Dazzle, what say ye?

I've always been intrigued by the thought of the AAC adding SDSU (along with two other MWC programs). But I'm not sure the Mountain West programs would be interested.

Captain Bearcat offers a scenario (see Post No. 7 of this thread) that I could get on board with. But, again, it's highly unlikely to happen.

Thanks for asking, esayem. Now I shall go grocery shopping for my elderly parents.

Do report back this adventure upon your triumphant return. In limerick form, of course.

I actually have a running list (in a Microsoft Word doc) of limericks I've penned for two groups of women at the office: 1. "Bill's Angels" — three lovely, educated, saucy and eye-catchingly beautiful lasses each in her 30s (sadly, one has left us for a better job); and 2. "The Gals on the Back Row" — five ladies of varying degrees of sassiness who appreciate the ribald behavior and deft wordsmithing of a middle-aged rapscallion.

Since our company does not have an HR department, Bill Dazzle has yet to be fired for such shenanigans.

SDSU by themselves - no. But if you included BYU or Boise State or the AFA then probably so. We'll see what happens with the NCAA ruling for an 11 member conference.

BYU is not interested. They have made it clear they're not interested in a G5 conference. Why? Because their archrival Utah is in the Pac-12. Their ego and pride won't let them have an AAC schedule with division games vs SMU, Tulsa, Tulane, Houston, SDSU and Boise State while Utah gets division games vs USC, UCLA, Arizona, Colorado and Arizona State. They will stick to independence as long as it takes unless a P5 conference comes calling.. As for Boise State, do you really want that prima donna in your conference? Air Foce? They already play Navy. And Army too. There's nothing out there in the AAC that would make them ditch their Front Range rivals and sacrifice basketball and the Olympic sports in the WAC, Summit or Big Sky.

You guys have a nice thing going on with the AAC. Why do you want to ruin it with Western schools boggles my mind. Boise is no longer needed for football credibility like in 2011 nor AAC basketball is bad in order to need SDSU basketball. Losing UConn basketball sucks but SDSU or pretty much any possible replacement out there cannot replicate UConn's history and success. Gonzaga might come close but if they ever go east it will be to the Big East which has like minded institutions.

Sad thing is the AAC schedule you listed is harder than the Slack12 schedule you listed.

But those Pac-12 South schools have more prestige and pedigree than all the AAC combined. Heck, USC by itself has more prestige than all G5 conferences combined.

Why would Texas settle for a Cal State school when they have a fixation with the UC schools + USC. I just don't see Texas being happy with a "consolation prize" even if it's just for FB only. UCF? Their directional name doesn't help. That's a deal breaker for the Big XII's decision maker, Texas. If their name was Florida Tech, more than likely they would be in the Big XII by now.

As I suggested years back -- that UCF merge with Fla.Tech and adopt the name.

Not sure it would punch their ticket right now, but a proactive move would be wise.

The UT-Pac-12 marriage is not going to happen. SDSU had talks with the Big 12 in 2016, but distance was an issue for the Big 12. That is why I think "football only" could work. Maybe not. But I would not write off SDSU as a "Cal State School."

SDSU is ranked No. 181 in the 2019 Forbes ranking of best colleges (650 in total). They were ranked behind UT at 76 and TCU at 148 and ahead of every other Big 12 school. So they are not a bad academic fit. From a talent standpoint, SDSU has had 19 players selected in the NFL draft in the past ten years, along with the ten straight winning seasons. That ranks ahead of Iowa State with 6, Kansas with 6, Kansas State with 14 and Oklahoma State with 16 for the same period of time (2011-2020). So for a G5 school, they recruit and develop football talent.

The same goes for UCF. They can fit in academically and athletically. If UT is waiting for a school worthy of their being in the same conference with them, then they will be waiting for a long time. Besides, the decision to expand is not just decided by Texas.

Well Bobcat, #76 Texas doesn't have to look far down the Forbes list to find other schools worth aligning with. Four institutions who are worthy of being with the Horns

79. UC San Diego
84. UC Santa Barbara
87. UC Irvine
88. UC Davis

UC San Diego has most of the pieces already in place to join a power conference. UCSD and Texas to the PAC? Why not??

San Diego State is looking at having football players return to campus no earlier than July 7 and is making plans to play the season as scheduled, athletic director John David Wicker said.

Wicker said SDSU had been planning for a hybrid model, no matter what, and feels that CSU Chancellor Timothy White’s announcement was misconstrued by some people who thought fall sports would be canceled.
“We’re going to have students on campus,” Wicker said.
July 7 is the target date for bringing back football players because it is the start of the second summer session.
SDSU is scheduled to open the season at home against FCS Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
“We’re going to plan that we are going to play our football opener as scheduled,” Wicker said. “I don’t think anyone will be able to answer that question with 100% certainty, but we’re going to plan.

And I think he only cares about sports and not anything else. I still think that all California schools will have no sports this fall. These ADs and other school leaders should think about the safety and health of all students and not go after greed of money. There are most more important things than sports to think about than sports.
