So me and GW11 had a good debate a while ago on graduate transfers and how much you can count on them to perform on a bigger stage...

Well, it's no longer a debate, Stever. You definitely won that one. MU has had its share of under-performing/limited grad transfers in the Wojo-era (Carlino, Reinhardt, J. Johnson, Chartouney). Reinhardt was out best overall player, but the other three had their limitations for sure.

The need for four-year players and development is as strong as need as ever in college basketball. Between transfers, grad transfers and players leaving early, it only takes one class to derail a program. Hopefully, programs can rely on grad transfers as bench guys, rather than go-to starters.

yet the # of grad transfers goes way up... It's amazing the data doesn't support it, but programs still are going for it big time...

Yeah. I bet there's a lot of other factors that go into it too though. Whether its a transfer out (to replace with a grad transfer), an injury, a way to balance classes, or a way to fill out a current class with no other HS recruits available/interested, it's not always black/white to the point where "we need a grad transfer to play immediately". I would guess that the coaching staffs, at least by majority, do not expect a grad transfer to come-in and be a top-3 player (now, the player might think otherwise, but that would explain why they are leaving in the first place to an extent).

At least that's how I think about it.

It’s definitely hit or miss. From recent GU memory, Terrell Allen worked out well for us, and his scoring went up 30-40% from last year at UCF. Trey Dickerson’s fell from double digits to just over 4 ppg. It’s probably a more complicated issue than what the tweet implies- higher competition levels in many cases, usage rate differences, things like that.

For the Hoyas, if Mac and Omer hadn’t been hurt and we had maintained some level of depth post Akinjo quitting, we might have been an NCAAT level team this year. And a lot of that would have been due to Allen.
