Kelvin was different...Holgs needed a pillowy landing zone, Kelvin wanted to prove people wrong after all of the **** he had been getting based on the Indiana part of his career.
So it's ("always" except for when it isn't) would probably be a better way for the earlier poster to put it. Point being it isn't "always" at all, each situation is different. For example, I think Ohio U. is pretty happy they hired Solich for the 2005 season.
For sure, but that's the model...a guy who had something to prove when he felt he was wronged. Solich won 9 games in his final season and ended ranked in the Top 10 in 3 of his 6 years, and in the Top 20 in two others at Nebraska. The fact that he gets canned, then Bill Callahan comes in a ***** down his leg for four years, he was a mad, mad dude at OU in those first few years...completely different from Tubs/Holgs who were mediocre and fled an axe. Hell, the man was two seasons removed from losing to arguably the best college football team of all time in the NC game when he was fired AFTER finishing the season in the Top 20.
Re-litigating the Nebraska-Solich debacle is pretty funny. Nebraska is kind of an also-ran now...would they have been if they kept a dude who ended the season in the Top 20 in 5/6 seasons at the helm and won 75% of his games? Probably not...
Complete sidepoint, but if you want a laugher, look at Eric Crouch's stats the year he won the Heisman. Dude wouldn't have even made a conference team with that line nowadays.
Texas did the same thing with Mack Brown, and it's looking like he may be turning UNC around. (Side note: Texas also did that with their basketball coach Rick Barnes) An impatient fan base can destroy a program.
Yep, how the script plays out with coaches who felt "wronged" is one of the surest bets in sports.
