St. Joe's has a $293 million endowment and they're publicly shopping for a merger.

Is that still the USciences deal? That has some strategic advantages. Siena is positioned as a mostly undergrad liberal arts college. They could merge with the struggling St. Rose if they want, which would give them some postgrad education credentials if nothing else, but there isn’t quite the same synergy other than their Catholic traditions.

The Philly region has seen its share of mergers and acqusitions over the past few decades. Everything from Drexel-Hahnemann, Rutgers-UMDNJ (and the residual gains by Rowan), Rowan and the restructuring of NJ community colleges, Penn gobbling up hospitals, and Penn State aching for space in the area, that big Jefferson-PhillyU thing really pushed this one along. It’s almost a culture favorable toward it locally.

I didn’t get the impression Saint Joe’s was in a bad spot. They just want to keep up.

Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise if Villanova eventually jumps in somewhere. They’re just building up over there.

D2 Bridgeport will be no more as Hartford is taking part of the school and a community college taken up another part, and they sold their former football stadium that they hold soccor to the high school next door. No word if Hartford plans on letting Bridgeport to continue sports there.

The Claremont Colleges are a 5 college consortium—they were always one institution.

it's something called Goodwin University, not Hartford, and yes athletics will stay. It's possible they will change the athletics name from Bridgeport to Goodwin, but that seems to be undecided as of now.

My bad. It was supposed to be Sacred Heart University, but now I see they backed out oif the merger in October. It was supposed to be three schools to aquired parts of the campus. Goodwin and Sacred Heart are 2. Goodwin was for profit before they went to not for profit in 2004. Goodwin dows not have any sports, and are not in any orginations like the NCAA or NAIA.

University of Science is being taken over by St. Joseph's in a merger.

There are some rumblings that 3 of the GSC schools could close down. Not sure who, but Shorter and Lee are small.

I've been watching the Bridgeport situation for many years now, since I first heard of it in 90's. I've been sure they were finished once or twice before. Guess not...and good for them.

However, those statements regarding the future of athletics are unusually strong. They leave no doubt. Interesting to see if they stay at the d2 level while things get settled.

UT Southern is much better branding. And the founder of Martin Methodist was a KKK member so 2 birds with 1 stone.

To be honest, we probably could use much of this around the country. These tiny private schools just don't have the resources and are too expensive for students. The whole UT southern deal seems like a win win for all involved particularly the students currently enrolled. I wouldn't mind seeing USC do some more of the same around South Carolina.

Do you think the UT system will allow UT Southern to stay in the NAIA? MMC has a couple national championships in women and men's soccer.

Except USC would be better off expanding the current USC schools before exploring this route.

At one point, Shorter really did have some very serious financial support problems, but,as I was researching the matter, I also saw that Shorter addressed those problems and it is supposed to be on better financial footing now. Don't know if COVID-19 adversely affected that or not.

Well, yes that is true. USC Aiken and USC Upstate are big, but the others are tiny.

RE: 345 Small Private Colleges And Universities Could Close Down In The Next 6 Years
This is an interesting thread. The challenges facing higher education extend beyond the immediate response to COVID.

Two sources drive current higher education revenue streams: tuition and a combination of revenue from auxiliary sources (athletics, housing, research). Both of these revenue sources continue to undergo significant challenges as Americans grapple with the perceived cost of education vs. the value and demographics shifts resulting in declining enrollments.

I don’t want to venture a guess about the number of schools at risk of closing their doors or merging with larger institutions, but over the next decade the higher Ed herd will be thinned. Smaller private schools with lower endowments are most at risk. Public’s aren’t immune either with regional universities experiencing enrollment declines facing increased pressure.

Here in Nashville, we have seen during the past few years Belmont University "merge" with (i.e., basically, take control of and absorbed) both O'More College of Interior Architecture and Design and Watkins College of Art, Design and Film. So that's two small colleges (both of which had rather significant histories) that no longer operate in the Nashville market.
