Coronavirus realignment scenario
With everything going on now, and the economy perhaps going into a depression, almost every college and university will have to cut funds over this time.

Getting into more geographically compact conferences is one of the scenarios which is very possible.

In my scenario, this would last at least the next 3-4 years, and may be permanent.

The P5 (ACC, B1G, Big XII, Pac-12, SEC) and Ivy Leagues wouldn’t have any changes.

This would take effect in every sport except men’s and women’s basketball and football. There would be 30 conferences.

Northeastern Scheduling Alliance (48 schools)

Southern Section- Mount St. Mary’s, Coppin State, Loyola (MD), UMBC, Navy, Morgan State (one division)
Delaware State, UMES, Robert Morris, St. Francis (PA), Youngstown State, D2 moveup (other division)

Central Section- Lafayette, Lehigh, Monmouth, Rider, NJIT, Bucknell (one division)
Wagner, St. Francis (NY), LIU, Stony Brook, St. Peter’s, Fairleigh Dickinson (other division)

Northern Section- Iona, Manhattan, Army, Marist, Albany, Siena (one division)
Binghamton, Colgate, Niagara, Canisius, Buffalo, St. Bonaventure (other division)

New England Section- CCSU, Sacred Heart, Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Bryant, New Haven? (one division)
Holy Cross, Boston University, Merrimack, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, UMass Lowell (other division)

Mid-Atlantic Scheduling Alliance (35 schools)

Western Group- Creighton, St. Louis, DePaul, Marquette, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, Duquesne

Northern Group- Northeastern, UMass, Rhode Island, Providence, UConn, St. John’s, Fordham, Hofstra, Seton Hall

Middle Group- Villanova, St. Joseph’s, LaSalle, Drexel, Temple, Delaware, Towson, George Washington, Georgetown

Southern Group- George Mason, Richmond, VCU, James Madison, William & Mary, UNCW, Davidson, Elon, College of Charleston

Southern Scheduling Alliance (62 schools)

Southern Section- FIU, FAU, FGCU, USF, UCF, Stetson (one division)
Bethune-Cookman, UNF, Jacksonville, Troy, South Alabama, Florida A&M, Mercer (other division)

Central Section- Longwood, Liberty, VMI, Radford, ETSU, Chattanooga (one division)
Samford, UAB, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State (other division)

Eastern Section- Wofford, Furman, Citadel, SC State, Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern (one division)
Charlotte, Gardner-Webb, Winthrop, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Presbyterian (other division)

Carolinas/Virginia Section- Western Carolina, UNCG, High Point, NC A&T, Appalachian State, Campbell (one division)
East Carolina, Old Dominion, Hampton, Norfolk State, Howard, American (other division)

Northern Section- Murray State, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, UT-Martin, Tennessee State (one division)
Belmont, Lipscomb, MTSU, Austin Peay, Alabama State, Alabama A&M, North Alabama (other division)

Midwest Scheduling Alliance (47 schools)

Eastern Section- Cleveland State, Akron, Kent State, Ohio, Marshall (one division)
Toledo, Bowling Green, Wright State, Cincinnati, Miami (OH), NKU (other division)

Midwest Section- Bellarmine, Evansville, Indiana State, IUPUI, Western Kentucky, Ball State (one division)
Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Oakland, Detroit, Purdue-Ft. Wayne (other division)

Central Section- Valparaiso, Loyola Chicago, Northern Illinois, Chicago State, Green Bay, Milwaukee (one division)
Bradley, Illinois State, Southeast Missouri State, Eastern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Southern Illinois (other division)

Western Section- St. Thomas, Drake, Northern Iowa, Kansas City, Missouri State, Western Illinois (one division)
North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Omaha, Wichita State (other division)

Southwest Scheduling Alliance (40 schools)

South Texas Section- UTRGV, Incarnate Word, Corpus Christi, Texas State, UTSA, Houston Baptist (one division)
Houston, Rice, Texas Southern, Lamar, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State (other division)

North Section- Stephen F. Austin, SMU, North Texas, UT-Arlington, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State (one division)
Tulsa, Oral Roberts, Arkansas-Little Rock, Central Arkansas, Arkansas State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (other division)

Central Section- Grambling, Louisiana Tech, Southern, Northwestern State, Mississippi Valley State, McNeese State, Jackson State, Alcorn State (one division)

Northwest Section- UC-Davis, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Portland, Portland State, Seattle (one division)
Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Boise State, Montana, Montana State (other division)

Division II schools could fill in in spots where there are uneven divisions. Hockey could also be accommodated along with other D2s who just play one D1 sport.

What are your thoughts?

Why is Temple separated from the rest of the Philly area schools?

RE: Coronavirus realignment scenario
Temple would probably be in the Mid-Atlantic one. It was a proposal done by the UConn baseball coach that was posted on Monday.

Temple being in the AAC is the issue. It’s between the CAA, A-10 and Big East right now.

Throw in volleyball as a 2nd women's sport and then I think you could find a way for the P5's to take part in a doomsday scenario like you envision. I think if you polled most P5 AD's anonymously, they would probably prefer sports like tennis, soccer, softball, track and field, etc. to be only competing regionally anyway.

I'm not sure why the South Texas Section is set up with probably the three most competitive schools on one side (Houston, Rice, Sam Houston State) with the other half having probably the weakest four teams (Incarnate Word, TAMU-CC, HBU and UTRGV).

I think you can create bus leagues without making them so worthless to fans. For instance---a new SWC which includes Houston, Rice, N Texas, SMU, TxState, UTSA, LaTech, Tulane, and ULL would be far more fun than the league you've created for those same schools. That 9 team SWC league is either all or mostly bus trips---and it would sell far more tickets to fans than what you presented. I think leagues that look like that are far more likely if travel costs become more of an issue.

You could sign me up for this league tomorrow and I would never complain again and never miss an away game. If you really want to get crazy we could even add Southern Miss and Arkansas State and call it a day.

10 team leagues in this scenario would have 27 conference games for baseball and softball. 9 team leagues would play 24. 12 team leagues would play 30 conference games.
