Baseball Recruit Updates
Somewhat related, I've been keeping an eye on D1Baseball.com. For subscribers, you can access their transfer tracker here: https://d1baseball.com/featured/2020-d1b...r-tracker/
So far, 7 Seahawks are listed in the transfer portal: Broadus Roberson, Jacob Knapp, Brody Lawson, Ryan Haire, Branden Kunz, Riley Davis & Kohl Abrams.
Some of those kids have played the past couple of seasons for UNCW, others were freshmen in 2020 that didn't see any time on the field at all.
Also, Bryce Cota, younger brother of Clark Cota will be a grad transfer (from Campbell) to UNCW for 2021.

This is a good problem overall to have. We are loaded with very good recruiting class coming in. Plus, there are players from other schools contacting us about transferring here. I do hate to see Broadus leave. He has potential to be a beast.

RE: Baseball Recruit Updates
Cole Benton's twin brother, Cody, is transferring to UNCW from ECU. I assume he'll sit out 1 year and be a Fr again (for 3rd year) in 2022. That's how that will work, right? It's basically like 2020 didn't happen from an athletic eligibility standpoint for spring athletes, so the year he'll sit out for transferring will be a RS year and he'll be a Fr in 2022.

They're not identical, he's a big RH that throws pretty hard.

RE: Baseball Recruit Updates
UNCW commit Tanner Thach won a 1A state championship yesterday for Perquimans. I didn't get to see him pitch much (he started their game last Wednesday), but he had a leadoff double in the bottom of the 10th of game 1 and went on to score the winning run.

Those are some pretty incredible stats. With only 45 IP, has he been not starting the whole year? Or maybe just a product of a wonky season that may not have been as long as normal.

It was a weird season; football didn't wrap up until March/April, so that could've played a part in it. They had a talented team all the way around and I think there is a HS pitch count where you can't throw more than 160 pitches in a week, so yesterday their coach seemed to be picking his spot's for Thach. He came in a bases loaded situation with two out; gave up two hits three runs on 6 pitches and then they pulled him.

Their competition, East Surry has a sophomore committed to UNC (Folger Boaz, LHP) and another athlete/pither committed to OSU football (Benji Gosnell, TE).

I don't see where Thach gave up 3 runs. Box score says he came in the bottom of the 7th and last inning and gave up 2 hits, 1 run and struck out 3 to end the game.

Inherited runners scored, so they weren't charged to him. He didn't record an out in the inning. The hits on his line appears to be incorrect though; I suppose they could've recorded one of them as an error (ground ball up the middle, stopped by SS, but not handled. It was a tough chance IMO). That infield hit/error allowed one to score; Boaz lined an OF single to score two and then they pulled him.

If you're talking about the state championship game. Only one run was scored in the inning and he struck out three to end the game.

He also pitched in the second inning; the scenario I described was in the second and it happened as I stated.

I finally was able to find a decent recap of what you were saying. The first run was due to a miscue by the SS. The next two scored on a clean single. It apparently didn't shake him up, since he came back in the game and shut them down. And he was playoff MVP.

Glad it makes sense now; I didn't mean to suggest it shook him. They pulled him quickly because of pitch count and he only had ~30 left he could throw due to state regulations. They had a team full that could swing the bat. I'm not surprised that he was the MVP, but I wouldn't say he carried the team over the weekend. They were a strong team.

Yeh, sounds like they beat a very strong East Surry team. Takes more than one guy to do that.

Perquimans High is where Catfish Hunter graduated from in '64. They "played up" and won the 4A title in '63 and were the runner up in '64.

Dr. William Nixon, UNCW donor and Trot's dad, played on the Perquimans '63 and '64 teams, too.

I'm from Eastern NC. Perquimans HS while smaller than the school I attended was in our athletic conference. Catfish Hunter's son and I are the same age. Played against his son numerous times in little league all stars and school ball. The kid could absolutely mash balls. Not sure what came of him after HS, but he was a fun kid. Met his dad a number times and have a signed ball. There used to be a sign in Perquimans about entering the "Home of Catfish Hunter". Definitely an Eastern NC legend.
