Conference Changes
Sources: Conference-USA is discussing an 18-game league schedule where teams closest in proximity will play each other twice. Another effect of coronavirus.

My thought is this is something the CAA will explore. We are scheduled to travel out of state to Stanford, URI, Lafayette, and UNH. I bet we punt Stanford, play JMU & UR twice, and keep our bus ride to Lafayette.

(05-28-2020 09:55 AM)TDenverFan Wrote:  I'd agree. ECU still wants to have big time football, they often lead the G5 in attendance, and games at most current FCS schools would be unlikely. Villanova is at least a name brand school because of basketball, which helps with casual fans, but the core 6 Sitting Bull posted makes a lot of sense, and I think W&M could position themselves to get added to that.

UMass I'm a little iffier on, I could see them being swapped for Liberty, but a lot of schools don't want to associate with them, and UMass is a reasonable drive to Boston (Hour and half).

Respectfully, you guys are thinking in the old paradigm where pride and ego largely guided conference affiliations. Sure, ECU partnering in a conference with Elon is the equivalent of them being force fed lima beans, but if the choice is dropping to FCS or dropping multiple sports/bankruptcy/canceling the program, etc., then more schools are going to swallow their pride like we are seeing with UConn (and Idaho previously). Maybe ECU makes the cut, though they’re well past their glory days and have flagging attendance, but in the big picture several G5 programs are no longer on a sustainable path due to this pandemic (not that they really ever were), so talking about what they “want” is less relevant now than what they “need” to do to survive. If it makes more sense, swap ECU with either GSU or Appy State.

RE: Conference Changes
There are lots of other potential players for new football conference consideration. More likely for a new Yankee would be Monmouth and Central Connecticut with LIU and Merrimack stepping into the NEC.

New Yankee Conference
UMass
UConn
UNH
Maine
Stony Brook
URI
Albany
Monmouth
Central Connecticut

For the CAA, whether ODU and ECU want to step down would be questionable. MEAC and Big South teams would want in on the discussion. Those that draw well (NC A&T and NCCU) could now be attractive.

RE: Conference Changes
I can't see ECU stepping down in football. Not sure about ODU.

That's why I suggested rebranding the CAA as a 2nd tier FBS. Then, it won't sell as a step down. Travel would be drastically better for both schools but the additional scholarships, for current FCS members, may bleed money saved on travel costs.

At the very least, don't worry about ODU, Liberty & ECU but focus on realigning what is currently the CAA and consider a split conference, regionally speaking.

I hope the ADs are at least talking about a regional conference.

I agree with you. I didn't express myself very well.

After living in NC for 11 years back in the day, and having more contact with ECU alumni than was healthy, I would expect them to view a re-branded CAA in FBS as a step back, even though rational people would not.

I think that ODU would look at it differently. I'm just not sure about Liberty.

It is my fervent hope to come up with a regionally aligned conference that would incorporate W&M with top tier FCS programs and G5 programs that are traditional rivals in all sports. Probably not likely, but I used to really enjoy trips to places like Annapolis.

RE: Conference Changes
I think we may get to the same conclusion by events this fall. Let everyone play out their schedules with no fans and other than the big boys, no TV money. We may well see what should have happened a long time ago.....a league of the P5 and everyone else. Get rid of the scholarship differences and don't allow teams in the lower D1 to play the big boys any more. Eventually the P5 will peel off from the NCAA and become sponsored by Gatorade, Nike, etc.

We're actually in a good spot. We have too many wealthy donors, who care, to cut anything more than a couple of the "fringe" sports.

Geographically, we are surrounded by universities that value athletics. Isolated schools like UNH, SBU, Maine etc are going to have a much tougher time should conference realignment occur.

May be the first time I didn't want to punch his face. Ha.

I agree, excellent suggestions. And, it ISN'T hard. I really hope Huge's radio silence is because she's knee deep in working on this.

If W&M, JMU, Towson, and UD agree on this, they should contact D'Antonio and demand that he finally earn his salary.

He and the 4 ADs should send a letter to the schools we've mentioned and tell them, get on the train or we're moving on...you have two weeks to make up your mind. Rank order which schools are the most appealing and go down that list until the CAA is packed.

I think getting VCU or GMU to sign on would create a tidal wave of interested schools. Really focus on the Rams & Patriots.

I still like splitting up the CAA / Yankee idea with division champions facing each other in the Finals. That may require northern schools to join for all sports.
