Certainly will, because when kids take campus visits right before signing day it’s often on a weekend with basketball games going on. And if you can get into a new barn with the enthusiasm going it goes over well with the recruits even though they’re there for a different sport.

Yep, even without a visit Terell Strickland specifically mentioned the success of football and other sports making him want to be at JMU and be a part of bringing that same success to basketball. Hopefully Byington can win and fill up the AUBC then that can start to work both ways between football and basketball.

247: https://247sports.com/Player/Gus-McGee-46097635/
Rivals: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2...-interests

Love a good surprise commitment in the middle of the week.
Gus McGee, a 6-5 Tight End from St. John's Prep. Rated a 3* on both Rivals and 247.

Chose the Dukes over FBS offers Cincinnati and UMass. Has a ton of Ivy, Patriot League, and a few CAA offers as well.
Go Dukes and welcome Gus!

That’s our 4th 3- star recruit.

We now have more 3-star recruits than Ohio state. Boom!

(Let’s ignore the Buckeyes 4 and 5-star guys ;-) )

Cignetti and staff are stretching the JMU footprint. Looks like they're not afraid to pull the trigger if they like the talent

This is the second year in a role we've taken a kid who played HS football in Massachusetts.

2020 Sammy Malignaggi (early enrollee)
2021 Gus Mcgee

Cig is going after big time prospects with big time rankings. Just saw another 3 star DE from PA tweeting JMU recruiting artwork. Love what Cig and the guys are doing.

Of course these guys want to come here. They want to play for a great team, get a great education, win a championship or two, and get a fair shot at the NFL. And who knows... maybe they will be part of the first JMU FBS team 05-stirthepot

Seems JMU has also offered a RB from Columbus, OH, that was getting several FBS offers.

According to his twitter posts, he has only received an offer from JMU but has not yet verbally committed. The tweet you're referencing is just a recruiting graphic schools typically send recruits to try to "show them love".

RE: 2021 Football Recruiting
It looks like the staff is showing some interest in Chavion Smith, a 3* RB from Statesville HS.
He is teammates with Jasaiah Gathings who is part of the class of 2021.

Offers from mostly FBS schools including Kentucky, Tennessee, Charlotte, Miami (OH), Southern Miss, etc.
https://247sports.com/player/chavion-smith-46082832/
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2...ith-232246

It doesn’t look like JMU has officially offered yet but I expect us to soon.
He attended a camp at JMU last May.

https://twitter.com/smithchavion/status/...03041?s=21

Our friend, Jasaiah, is giving him some encouragement to make the move to the Dukes.

If you can’t tell, it’s a slow day at work for me.07-coffee3

Pretty sure he’s committed. He tweeted about receiving an offer back in April, the graphic he tweeted yesterday said “BURGBOUND XXI”.

Thank you, that was my take as well, but I just verified I was wrong. Potomac was right in that he was offered but not yet committed.

Wow! Solid. At 6'2, 4.55, I can see him moving to receiver to relieve the logjam in the backfield. If he puts on 30 pounds of muscle, I can also see him becoming a future Percy/Latrele-type beast.

The only offers I saw were Akron and Ball State. JMU is a much better destination than either of those.

He was listed at 6'2 as a sophomore, 6'0 as a senior. Weird!

Doesn’t appear he’s actually committed to JMU or anywhere else at this time. All the recruits tweet out love/praise/hype graphics from schools. Even if it reads burg bound doesn’t matter. Recruits with any stars make sure their commitment isn’t a mystery with a pinned tweet and huge note. You’d know if he was committed.

Ohio, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, EKU, and Cincinnati also offered. Basically most of the MAC + Cinci.

It is weird, but I also somehow shrunk in college. Five seasons my height was 5 different listings and somehow got smaller my last season. You’d think if anything you’d oversell, but my last year I was listed as 2” shorter than my true height and not sure why.

When it comes to high school recruits and depending upon the position I instantly just assume they’re inflated 2” and 10-20lbs., so perhaps the initial listing was his own submission while the shorter one was done at a combine.

I remember walking onto the field in 2004 after the W&M playoff game and being surprised how "short" many of our players were.

Roger that! Steinfeld and Magerko were our two best offensive linemen, and I recall talking to them (seems like they were always together) on the field after the Natty in Chatty and they both appeared to be under 6' tall and maybe 260 to 270, tops! They sure did push some Griz ass up and down the field, though.

RE: 2021 Football Recruiting
Today’s players are so fit they don’t look their weight. 300 pounds of muscle looks different than 300 pounds of fat. Josh Wells came to a Duke Club event in Richmond. He told me he weighed 305. He had a flat stomach and not an ounce of fat. He was big but in no way did he look 300 pounds.
