Because people took the actions which the Pollyannas complained about as being unnecessary. You don't get to spike the football on boosting Covid-19 up to the #3 cause of death in the country but NOT making it to #1 as a result of the people taking the actions required to prevent it from happening.

Indeed, as there is growing statistical evidence that wearing masks does more than just reduce the likelihood of effecting others but also reduces the severity of the infections that do occur, that is growing evidence that the Pollyannas lying to people about the Covid-19 being "just like the flu" are not just sabotaging the economy, but by encouraging anti-maskers are leading to a higher death rate.
