Do you honestly not get it?

Every school will be hurt by the lack of the NCAA tournament.

JMU still owes on the football stadium, and very possibly will have no, or drastically reduced gates receipts to pay for it.

We just completed a new Arena we now have to pay for with possibly no, or drastically reduced gate receipts to pay for it.

You think other fans are laughing at our timing of building a new 100 million arena? What affect will that have on our other sports?

And we'll see how long those HUGE student fees will still be able to charged by JMU to students when Unemployment reaches historic highs.

Sorry NJDuke97, there are no winners in college athletics for this, and it seems to me JMU will be right there with ODU in hurting more than most.

the student athletic fees has nothing to do with that decision.

either someone can afford to go to college still, or they can't.

are they going to NOT go to JMU because of the high student fees and look to another Virginia school like Longwood or Mary Washington or Christopher Newport that don't have student fees?

guess what, all 3 of those schools have overall tuition greater than or equal to JMU.

it's not a question of JMU vs another VA school.
It's a question or college or no-college for people.

that has nothing to do with the student fees.

You believe student fees will continue as they have in the past increasing each year?

I don't think student fees would go down due to us losing students to MWU, CNU, or LU. I think they will go down because the government just spent trillions, and another huge amount is still coming, and even with that - many, many businesses will go under. I think over the next 12 months you are going to see more focus on government spending, and individual spending than any time in our lives for this flu we had under control. People will be more tight with their money than every before. An economy shut down for a couple months (at the very least) will have huge ramifications.

This thing is much bigger than just being able to work for home for now.

Strangely - most people are better off in the short term due to the different programs the government is offering. How long can that last, and what happens when the government adds the debt to the debt and then starts printing money?

I've got parents we laid off:
- Making as much as they were
- Not having to work
- Now not having to pay 300+ a week for day care per child
- And will get the stimulus check.

Probably most on here are better off "working" from home and getting a $1,200 check from the government. How long can that last?

This will all come with an amazing amount of debt. With the mounting debt, I also feel business will come back much slower that people expect.

The real ugly part of the rest of this year is when owners/managers of companies have to decide who has their job eliminated because of the downturn. I work in a field, media, that was in trouble already, so any recession just accelerates the decline. Good thing we diversified into live events to offset losses in print revenue.....

03-lmfao03-lmfao Love it. I do hope guys (and other institutions) make it out of this without having to make too many tough decisions. Seeing your wrestling program go is tough. We do take some shots at each other in good fun but at the end of the day I want to see all athletic departments in the Commonwealth prosper.

I think there was discussion that Nikki would be ready for bigger programs soon. Hopefully ODU brings in a coach that can get this rivalry back up and running.

They'd be wise to sneak Charlotte Smith away from Elon before someone else does. Charlotte is a good coach who does really well with the limited recruiting base she has now.....

RE: ODU in Trouble
Late to the discussion. I have worked alongside Dr. Sander in regard to NCAA decisions within the past year. He's a good man but leans more toward austerity than the impact of athletics on the college life. You are correct that in many cases schools specifically hire him to give them the leverage they need to make unpopular but necessary decisions. I know this firsthand. Again, I like Dr. Sander a great deal and he is well-intentioned.

ODU is just one of many mid-tier state universities that have sen poor financial situations turn catastrophic. Believe it or not there are schools in the Sun Belt & CUSA is even more dire circumstances. I'm looking toward you schools in Louisiana in particular who are getting hammered more by energy revenue shortfalls due than even COVID-19.

I am also the father of a HS senior who chose Texas A&M as his destination this fall primarily due to the athletic experience. He's an Austin-born son of a Longhorn and his mother and I are still adjusting to the maroon in our eyes. He passed on more prestigious academic schools simply because he wanted the major university experience. He has full scholarships to JMU peer schools and wouldn't even give them the time of day. For the record, that included my alma mater in Lynchburg who is still fledgling in the FBS landscape. Just another perspective. And yes, the gap year discussion in lieu of not being able to be on campus is a legitimate discussion among my son's friends.

RE: ODU in Trouble
Congratulations on doing so well financially that you can pay for him to attend A&M instead of the best option of the full scholarships. A lot of people don't get to make that choice. That's cool that you can give him that option. I teach HS students & have asked if a gap year is becoming more commonly considered. Most of my students will go forward with original plans, but the wealthier families might be more comfortable losing big deposits & having their kid stay an extra year amid this pandemic. I teach in a fairly conservative "blue-collar" community, so that might skew it too.

RE: ODU in Trouble
Actually he only had tuition scholarships and the cost of room & board outside of the state of Texas public universities was higher in many cases paying it all at home. That made the decision easier for him choosing between A&M, Texas & Texas Tech. I totally get that everyone's situation is different. Just passing along from what I am hearing.
