WBB ranked #3 in Mid-Major poll
https://www.whsv.com/content/sports/Duke...96171.html

I know some people complain about JMU being called a mid-major but I see it as a fact of life; it's pretty much anyone not a P5. In any car, I think this is pretty darn cool. It puts our women in some very exalted company, ahead of such teams as Gonzaga, Marist, and Missouri State, and behind ONLY Princeton and SD. (Drexel is ranked at #16). And the Dukes were still getting votes in the AP poll, so that's also good.

*eyeroll* That's exactly what I meant.

Do you also shun/refuse to acknowledge FCS football? Same difference, to my mind.

yes, supporting your point.

I don't shun FCS poll because there is an actual difference besides "little JMU" BS ... ~20 scholarships.

When we go FBS, a mid-major football poll will be shunned :)

Agree with BCP: Pretty sure UCF and Cinci don't eagerly support "mid-major" Football poll ratings. That's the correct analogy here.

~SMDH~ JMU is not P5. JMU rarely even cracks the AP poll. But we're good. VERY good. And, like the other schools in the poll, JMU *is* a mid-major. It's a fact of life.

Means a bunch more to have votes in the AP showing how we stack up against all the competition than to say we're very good when the P5, Big East, AAC, and Mountain West are not included (~100 schools).

Frankly, I love taking a look at Sagarins during football season to see about where we are against all of D1. The highest we've ever climbed was 32nd just prior to losing to Montana in 2008.

I daresay the AAC will be included next year after UConn is gone. The rest of the schools in it are pretty mid-major despite the size of some of them. And the Mountain West isn't included, or just didn't have anyone in the Top 25?

Yes, of course it's nice to be included in the AP, but it doesn't happen often because mids get ignored for the most part unless they are a "name brand" like Gonzaga or do something really spectacular like Missouri State or South Dakota....and then they fall out the minute they lose. Fact of life.

You're trying to convince me that Fresno State 25 - 7, 16 - 2, and Boise State 24 - 9, 13 - 5 are mid-majors but not in the top 25 of this poll. I call 100% bullsh!+. In addition, one I overlooked are the A-10 schools. Unless you're also going to try and convince us that Dayton 25 - 8, 15 - 1 also didn't make the top 25 of this poll.

These four conferences are high-majors and some consider the Big East to be more like a P-5 than a high major. Now that I've done some research, there's roughly 125 schools not included in and above this mid-major ranking and the more I find out the less I want to be a part of this classification. For me, it's a lot like participating in those other two post season tournaments, i relate those two tournaments and this mid-major ranking much the same as "let's give everyone a trophy" phrase.

I recall Xavier made a big deal about “Do not put us in these polls” while they were in the A10. It’s almost as if schools & teams aren’t less just because they’re not in the SEC!

Turn up your noses and be snobs if you want. There are a lot of very respected coaches voting in this poll. But have it your way.

Yes, it’s snobby to not want to accept an extremely subjective and undefinable lower classification.

Look in the mirror, I think you should lobby for UT to join that poll!

RE: WBB ranked #3 in Mid-Major poll
OtoP, I know you care about JMU and especially our WBB, but your posts, and more importantly, your responses to others, has a decidedly strong twist to our not being worthy of the things others have. It's as though you want to put limitations on us. Maybe you are simply an ambassador to a realistic point of view.

We know who Tennessee is, where they've been, the resources available to them, and what their programs, especially WBB, should be accomplishing. We're not ripping the Vols for underachieving all we want is JMU to be all it can be and then some.

WBB is certainly meeting expectations to the point we're totally disappointed when we lose to UMD after dominating for 90% of the game. That one JMU program is doing more than TN and it is killing you because you think we are less than Vols. Unless the stars align absolutely perfect, JMU and a national championship in WBB is highly doubtful. On the other hand, TN should be able to compete almost every year for a title. I'm okay with this actually like the position of being an overachiever. It allows me to say we don't need to be in this ranking. I wish I could say the same for our MBB.

RE: WBB ranked #3 in Mid-Major poll
I most certainly do NOT think we are less than Tennessee. I agree with you that JMU is unlikely to win a national championship in the foreseeable future, but unlike some people here, I see nothing wrong with making the semis in the WNIT although I would have liked for our team to make the finals. It would have been nice to go to the NCAA but I don't see that as the be-all and end-all because they often get seeded really badly and it's one and done; is that REALLY preferable? Some folks appear to think it is. I remember that DePaul game like it was yesterday--it was one of the most awful things I've ever seen, and it shouldn't have been. I still don't know what happened there. But I love what Coach O is doing with the Dukes and I'm hoping it continues. I'd love to see the ladies make the Sweet Sixteen at least once.

As for Tennessee, I completely disagree with you that they should be able to compete every year. You obviously do not know what has been going on down there since Pat Summitt got sick and there have been several different ADs, including one whose sole purpose, it seemed, was to completely destroy the brand. Every program has its zenith and then declines. Anyone here remember Louisiana Tech? Remember when UVA and Georgia were national powers? North Carolina? Now UConn's had a few down years and may be on the downswing. Who will be the Next Big Thing? Look like maybe Oregon. Is it "killing me" that Tennessee is no longer what it was? PLEASE. Some of y'all need to get over yourselves. Of course I miss Pat. I miss the glory days. I like Kellie Harper; she was always my favorite player and I really wish her success. But "killing me"? You are sick puppies if that's what you think.
