5 CAA schools in the top 10, that speaks to viability as a conference.

But, we were told the CAA was a sinking ship. We couldn't stay afloat after the departure of GMU, VCU, ODU, and GA State. Some even suggested we should join the Patriot League.

I believe this is stats for football spending. However, there is no guarantee that Joey D won't be able to mess it up, anyway.

Not sure I buy the numbers.
If the numbers are accurate, 5 Patriots and 6 CAA schools in Top Twenty.

It could be "spending" but the article calls it "earning"... If it is earnings then, to me, it must clearly include all contributions from alumni, boosters, etc. Otherwise, how to account for Elon's high number? I have seen their stadium and it is small. However, and it is possible that I am remembering this completely wrong, but isn't Richardson (ex-Carolina Panthers owner) an Elon alum who gives them a lot of money? If so, that would definitely explain Elon's "earnings" being so high.
Perhaps N.D. State is so low (at 15) because maybe the "earnings" are what are left over after expenditures (so, net instead of gross). I would assume that N.D. State has a lot of overhead in salaries and facilities.
So, how to explain W&M's high ranking? I would guess money from the Zables is still rolling in ......

Richardson went to Wofford and is an extremely active alumnus there. I have no idea how to explain Elon's numbers.

To the reporter’s credit, he acknowledges that there is no standard reporting practice for these numbers, but his headline “The highest-earning FCS programs...” is confusing since he doesn’t specify what earnings could consist of.
In a normal financial construct, ticket sales, media income and perhaps revenue received for playing FBS road games might be viewed as earnings. In the non-profit arena donations might be. Funds received from student activity fees are almost akin to an ability to tax students. These latter two categories are somewhat like subsidies (I’m not stating the football program doesn’t have benefits, only that as a stand-alone entity it receives outside assistance).
As to the applicability of these numbers as a measure of conference viability, some caution may be in order inasmuch as the numbers are in the past. Extrapolating them into the future requires an assumption that student activity fees, donations, revenue from FBS games, and ticket sales don’t come under stress and that conference affiliations don’t change.

You're right, that is what I was thinking of. Thanks! I knew it was a private school somewhere in the carolinas. So, there must be some other richie bankrolling Elon's high numbers.
