Will There Be College Sports In 2020-21 Academic Year?
We're all bummed out about the cancellation of the ACC and NCAA basketball tournaments as well as baseball and lacrosse for the current school year but it's hard to imagine Covid-19 being in our rear view mirror by this fall. Will we have a college football season? Will we have a college basketball season? Are there long term implications for college sports if we don't? You know there would be massive layoffs in college athletics because the income stream will go down to near zero. How much difficulty will there be reassembling staffs? What happens to recruiting? Would Coach K, Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim, Leonard Hamilton and Jim Larranaga all be back for the 2021-22 season? I'll answer the last question. There's little chance they're all back. I wouldn't bet that most of them will be back.

Reason for hope: the situation in China is starting to get back to normal. It seems like the virus has run its course there - after about 2 months of battling the disease, they haven't reported any new cases in over a week, and while sick people are still dying from COVID-19 there, it's less than 1/10th as bad as it was at the peak (and falling). So assuming the USA is also on a 2-to-3 month cycle, this should all be over by mid-Summer.

We haven't done anything like the total lockdown in China.

I still think resumption of baseball is plausible.

I think to get complete control, we need to do a 4 week complete lockdown.

It seems that even the Kentucky Derby will be postponed until the first week of September.

Yes ... there will be sports next fall.

I give this 7 weeks max before stuff starts returning to normal.

My brother's company had their asian offices -- Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo -- on mandatory work from home status when this broke out. They just came off of it, and can return to their offices. That lasted 7 weeks.

The US hasn't been hit nearly as hard as that part of Asia. If things are getting back on line there, we will be fine.

Not yet. Just saw NBC news that says that the US could have as many as 2.2 million deaths if we dont take drastic actions. With the severe shortage of testing kits and ventilators, I have no confidence of this thing going away in seven weeks. I have heard that we should hit the peak in 45 days. So there is always hope. Remember that China built dozens of hospitals in a matter of weeks to accommodate the virus victims. And they didnt have a shortage of testing kits for early detection. And they demanded that people stay home to keep the virus from spreading. I certainly hope that you are right and I am wrong.

2.2 million is probably worst case (and, yes, designed to drive audience). However, half a million is not far-fetched IMO.

Yeah, hopefully an infected guy doesn’t go visit a nursing home over there and start it up again.

ADs are expecting a big financial hit from the cancellation of the tournament.

If the next college football season is cancelled, the ACC athletic departments are going to lay off almost everyone.

Just heard on the local news that all ACC sports activities have been canceled for the spring.

The NCAA offered a freebie year of eligibility for Spring, that'll incentive cancellation particularly among the P5 as they'll have EXTRA loaded rosters next year.

The pro leagues have current resumption dates in late April.

If it actually got to that the feds would point their fire hose of free money at collegiate athletics like they are cruise liners, airliners, and dang near anybody else who can make a plausible case who has a lobbyist.

Imagine the money an NCAA sponsored FBS tournament would take in. They’re clearly leaving money on the table here. The NCAA should start a tournament with an auto-bid to each FBS conference, and if a team would rather play for the ESPN title, that’s their choice.

If the next college football season is cancelled, the ACC athletic departments are going to lay off almost everyone.

This seems to suggest that the enormous amount of money the NCAA has been accused on this board of hoarding instead of giving it to member schools is a figment of our imagination.

Tournament units earned by participation and/or tourney wins are paid out over six years. That is to say, at any given time the NCAA should have a liability on its books for the five years' worth of payments not yet distributed at the end of each fiscal year. According to the article, the NCAA has insurance adequate to make the payments for one year, so unless we lose next season as well the finacial impact on schools shouldn't be all that great.

The same thing should be true of conference revenues from media contracts, since all of the football season and probably 95% of the 2019-20 basketball season played out before anything was shut down. If P5 athletic departments weren't setting aside for a rainy day some of the obscene amounts of revenue they've been getting, then shame on them for being poor stewards.

The short-term impact to ACC schools shouldn't be great. Some FCS schools may hurt a little worse, I suppose. UVA will just rely on student athletic fees [LINK].
