I voted non purely because unlike 1919 tv is a thing. Sure money is lost but some of the loss is recouped by the tv contract and the ads. With no one at the game more people on paper should be watching.

They'll close the events to fans as long as needed. However, the TV contracts are so big, they won't be able to cancel the events unless absolutely necessary. The games will go on as TV events in empty venues.

1919 Stanley Cup was canceled before Game 6 after several players passed out. A Montreal Canadiens player died.

NCAA/NHL/NBA might cancel to ensure no players contract the virus or drop dead like 1919. Imagine if the 1919 Stanley Cup was televised with players passing out.

It wont lead to cancellation, because of TV money. So it's still worth playing. But it could and almost certainly will lead to games played in empty stadiums.

I could not vote, because I think all events will go off for TV, but I think they will be in empty stadiums, which is kind of like cancelled.

At least we wont hear stories about spectators being hit by foul balls this year.

It is weird. Perhaps Zager & Evans were on to something (“In the year 2525”)

The irony is this is no where near the threat as the Spanish Flu was. That was a true pandemic. Peole were dead after 24 hrs of contraction. Ony 39 deaths in the US and the majority from the Nursing Home in Washington. I get being safe but this is pathetic. I said it before, when it reaches Flu level than talk to me. SARS and H1N1 were far more deadly.

Just an FYI, but the Spanish Flu was also an H1N1 virus.

SARS had 8000 cases worldwide throughout the entire epidemic.

H1N1 had a mortality rate of 0.01%-0.03%

SARS had 8000 cases 700 deaths
H1N1 18K dead
Standard Flu 30-60K a year

As for Spanish Flu, it primarily affected young men and killed many very quickly. 50K. Ironically, it was born in Kansas and spread via the railroad lines. It disappeared as fast as it came. Sadder was the known death rate, it was kept out of the media. Right now death rate in US 39 people. Primarily impacting those who also have underlying conditions.

People have more chance at the flu than this. Comparing the panic to the others is just amazing. My concern is this turns out as an over reaction, many will not treat the next threat as seriously.

1.) I don't think you understand what "pandemic" means.

2.) You take isolationist precautions so these things don't reach those levels.

IMO, we didn't treat ebola the right way the first time it really got a spotlight in the 90's. Thank friggin heck there were people awake at the wheel who kept the research and treatment going.

And that's part of what's happened here, pushing the fear forward: we didn't prepare.

So, if we start having these conversations and really work on this dialogue about preventative care again, comprehensively, then, it will be for something. If we don't take "the next one" seriously? Maybe because we'll have better infrastructure in place.
