What will HS Seniors & their Parents do?
The obvious answer is “community college” but here’s the dilemma. Take the example of a HS senior admitted into College of Engineering at Virginia Tech.

- Virginia Tech’s deadline for deferment is May 1
- If HS senior defers and takes >11 credits at community college, they lose guaranteed admission and have to reapply as a transfer student

So their options are:
- Pay $30k for webcam in mommy’s basement
- Take 3 classes at community college that might have to be spread over 2 semesters if this persists into spring 2021
- Take >3 classes at community college and risk never getting reaccepted into College of Engineering at Virginia Tech

Oh and they have to decide by May 1 when everyone will still be in the dark whether campuses will even be open for fall.

We're trying to figure it out. Son hasn't applied to any local colleges but we have two where he pays in state tuition. But you have housing issues there.

The incoming students still have the ability to delay their entrance, up to two years after the May 1. They have until August 14, 2020 to delay their enrollment, but they still must pay $400 matriculation fee (or declare hardship) on or before May 1.

RE: What will HS Seniors & their Parents do?
Allowing a large number of one-year deferments will create a massive knock-on effect in fall 2021.

Popular campuses would have either double their usual number of first-year students, or they would have to screw 2021 high school graduates (by making far fewer admission offers than normal) in order to take in all the class of 2020 kids who deferred for a year.

I think everyone is just waiting. Because deferring is for what? Travel to Europe? Finding a job in this economy?

I could see a lot of universities admitting smaller classes for fall of 2020 in anticipation that the fall 2021 class will be larger as many qualified students took gap years or spent two semesters at a commuter college.

My boy signed on at URI. The financial package made it cheaper than instate Rutgers, NJIT or TCNJ. Universities are game planning on the possibility of remote learning for fall semester and so are parents. We are looking into the possibility of a tuition discount, or going to county college until the covid is solved.

Or go to community college get an associates degree in engineering and maintain a 3.2 GPA and you have your guaranteed admission again.

RE: What will HS Seniors & their Parents do?
The big question in my household is about living in the dorms. Like most kids, the draw of campus life was a primary factor in my son's decision. But even the dorms do open this fall, it will be a shell of what the experience would have been this past year. We live less than an hour from Texas A&M so we are considering have him be a commuter at least for the fall. With gas prices practically non-existent it makes a ton of sense financially.

If they can't get A's at a community college, then they probably aren't going to be an engineer...and they'll find out at a much lower cost than going to Virginia Tech.

He's leaning towards Auburn. He was considering Texas-Arlington which offered in state tuition, but he didn't have the opportunity to visit before the shutdowns. We had him apply to Georgia Southern to have an in-state option. Georgia Southern and Texas-Arlington would be a lot cheaper, a really big factor if its an online semester and you don't have the "campus experience." But if you don't know, you have to arrange for housing and possibly at mid-term. He's pretty much eliminated a couple of other out of state SEC schools.

The bolded part says it all. Living at home for another year.
