Luckily, if what they've said over the years is consistent, the committee looks at more than numbers on a spreadsheet.

Well, the politics will always taint the process. Major and non-majors alike have benefited from an assessment that didn't just consider a metric. But, seeding aside, the committee gets most of the teams right.

I don't know if Davidson has what it takes to beat them in Ohio, but I could see Rhodie pulling it off when UD visits them.

Either that or don't be surprised if the A10 once again screws the bubble over by giving its AQ to a team off the board. I don't know if Dayton can hold up off its court if it sequentially sees a Duquesne, VCU, Saint Louis, Davidson, Rhode Island, or Richmond so soon after each other. Someone is going to get the better of them in Brooklyn.

It seems like each year, the prime candidates housing 'bid thieves' are the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West Conferences. Of course, lesser teams from the Power 6 can qualify for that moniker too, but it just seems like the lines of demarcation are pretty stark for the leagues I mentioned, when it comes to the upper echelon teams and the good, but not necessarily great challengers. Was it 1995 or 1996 that St. Joseph's entered the A-10 tourney and took its first loss? I think it happened in the quarterfinals.
VCU has been struggling as of late and UNLV's overall record isn't pretty to look at, but both teams have the goods to win their respective conference titles to make the Field of 68. It's not likely to happen, but if teams like Northern Iowa and East Tennessee State have their NET ratings under 40 when the Missouri Valley and SoCon tournaments tip off, they may have a chance to get at-large bids if they lose in the semi-final or championship rounds of their tournaments. It will be a stretch, but it could happen.
Like earlier posts on this thread, I don't see how NET is a dramatic improvement over the old RPI system. As far as I can tell, it's not the 'end-all, be-all' metric to determine at-large teams.
Championship Week begins next Tuesday. It's one of my favorite times of the year.

The only mid-majors that consistently produce at least 1 team that's good enough to be above the bubble line are MWC, A10, WCC, and AAC. All the P6 conferences have 5+ at-large bids per year so odds are one of those 5+ are going to win their conference tournament. Occasionally a conference like the MAC will produce one, like Buffalo last year, but that's only once every 10 years or so.

It's funny, but people were screaming conspiracy when the MVC took over the RPI those years ago. So, big schools stopped scheduling them, and others like them, or, wouldn't dare travel to their courts for the bout. Or, you'd see this expansion/realignment.

Now, there is this distinct top and bottom in college basketball conferences with regard to bid input. It's massively thinned out to the point where even the A10 and MWC don't "stuff" the bracket. WCC is still usually Gonzaga's bid to take, with maybe Saint Mary's or BYU sweating it out.

And out from all of that, from the initial "RPI is fixed?" You don't see mid-majors jamming up the top 50-75 like you used to. Then they dump it for NET anyway. Maybe RPI's "unworthiness" was a bit overstated...

Providence gets it done in Philly. 6-2 in February. Oddly, those two losses were to Xavier and St. John’s. They beat the five likely locks and Georgetown.

Someone forgot to wake up at Arch Madness this morning. MASSIVE upset where the 1-seed has never lost a quarterfinal in 30 years of the tournament and Thursday (7-10 seeds) teams have won just once on Friday and are on a 43-game losing streak dating back to 1998.

Either Drake scheduled soft or they seriously underachieved in the conference. I'm really not sure how you can be a 20-win 8 seed in the MVC. P5 conferences don't even have 8 seeds with that kind of record.

Boise taking it to SDSU so far 21-12. The 7, 8, 9 or 10 seed that draws Diego in the second round, should they get there, will be a trendy upset pick.

Arch Madness is total chaos.
1 & 2 seeds were 57-1 in quarterfinals in the tournament’s 30 year history.
46-game winning streak.

0-2 today.

Loyola blew a 6-point lead with 28 secs left.
Northern Iowa lost by 21 to their in-state rival they beat by 27 5 days ago.

Beat me to it. Loyola actually had an 18-point second half lead and 9 with 2:29 to go. Didn't wanna go dancing I suppose.

The Aztecs just went on a 10-0 run to cut a 16-point deficit down to 6.

They were 8-10 in conference, now 20-13 overall. 8 wins in the conference should normally get you a higher finish than 8th, but Evansville's 0-18 inflated all the other records in the conference.

SDSU looks like peak Sweet 16 team. If they get any further, it's because the bracket busted.

Impressive comeback by SDSU, from 37-21 down to tied at halftime. Then again, they're struggling with mediocre competition, they may not be so lucky in 2 weeks.

Now they're in firm control. I don't know why they insist on playing with teams like that.
