This article is pretty revealing, in that it also includes the tidbit that Randolph Childress (who's also a Wake alumnus) will continue to be on the staff. Is that the job that would have been reserved for Shay??

Forbes's attempts to keep Sarr at Wake

Both of thoseguys were going in before Forbes got there, it looks like he wasn't able to talk them out of testing the water.

I don't have any inside info, but supposedly, Sarr only officially entered today.

They were talking about losing him on the Wake board before Forbes was even hired.

I guess the difference is announcing you're going to, and then actually doing it.

It can take several days for your name to process and populate in the portal.

What he said isn't all that outrageous, he was simply quoting stats. The wonderful part about this is that he made public his private comments to Sair, obviously trying to stir up the Wake Forest fan base. And as a bonus he put a few blue noses out of joint, for which I am sure he cares not one bit.

Farewell, Coach, you will be missed.

I used to scan Deadspin a couple of times a week, mainly looking for the few writers with a comic bent (I especially enjoyed the "Your Team Sucks - (insert favorite NFL team here)." The entire writing staff quit a number of months ago and from the few times I have checked it out since then, there doesn't appear to be a lot of intentional humor there anymore.

I thought someone had posted this last week - or I thought I had - but I can't find it. Pretty interesting insight in both him and ETSU's first team under him:

Forbes says coaches should get better, too

Also..........yet another incoming guard there, Marcus Watson, announced today he's not going, and has asked for his release. He issued a statement that had this phrase in it:

"...a few days ago, Watson made a post that said “seem like everything going down hill” with a Wake Forest logo, indicating something was awry."

I guess take that for what it's worth.

I think now's a good time to reflect on what some of your all's thoughts were two years ago. Altho tempted, I won't bother to call out those who doubted his capability of success in the ACC. But I think said success came quicker than *ANY*body thought possible. But any way you slice it.......................COY in the ACC, in the year Coach K is retiring, is extraordinarily impressive. There's plenty of ink out there talking about it, but it's nice to hear him discuss it himself:

Forbes humbly reacts to his being named ACC COY

From JCP article: “Later in the day, the university announced that it had extended Forbes’ contract with what was called a “long-term deal.”

Cut it anyway you wish - MONEY talks and drives the college athletics bus. “LONG-TERM DEAL” = $$$$, something ETSU certainly could NEVER offer and am sure Dr Sander knew for sure when he hired Forbes. They might have had a laugh about it. He certainly deserves coach-of-the-year. The ACC is fair with this selection even though the media and polls have not been with what Wake and Forbes achieved this year. They were killers in some of the games I watched. As has been discussed to multiple deaths with many dead horse beatings, mid-major college basketball will NEVER sign a Steve Forbes to a “long-term deal”. However, as a longtime Bucs fan and the perennial looser in this system, stating this reality will never result in me “going along to get along”.

I'll take the bait and stand by my words. Glad he has been recognized, but he finished 5th and has yet to turn Wake into a Duke.

And Wake goes down in their first tournament game to a 13-19, 13 seeded team that played the night before.

Will Wake get an invite?

In my opinion yes.

Everyone don’t misunderstand me. Forbes is an excellent coach at a school with a weak budget.

Wake Forest's non-conference strength of schedule was 351st and the team was 1-4 vs. Q1 teams. I do not think that they deserve a bid to the NCAA tournament and I doubt that they will get one.

I do think he deserves the contract extension- just making Wake relevant in the conversation is a huge accomplishment.

For anybody that doesn't think Forbes can recruit and coach, you are in the very small minority. I'll let his record speak for itself.

The reason Forbes got a new contract was not only because of the complete turnaround of a perennial loser in his second year in one of the toughest basketball conferences but Georgia had him on their short list to replace Tom Crem who is out as HC.

RE: Thread to talk about if/when we lose Forbes.(Use this one)
The Athletic released a really good article on Forbes a few days ago. It sounds like he has kept a similar game plan that he used at ETSU to replicate his success at Wake.

"He won 75 percent of his games in five years at East Tennessee State by running the program the same way he ran Northwest Florida State before that; he just had more people to help him, is how he puts it. Forbes runs Wake Forest the same way he ran East Tennessee State, albeit with still more people to help him and nicer amenities around every corner. All three of Forbes’ primary assistant coaches worked with him at East Tennessee State, which creates a continuity in voices and consistency in messaging, not to mention a sort of shared brain about what Wake Forest wants in the players it recruits, and what it must avoid. “We know each other’s strengths and know each other’s weaknesses,” assistant coach BJ McKie says. “We’ve been doing this for so long together, it’s almost like clockwork.”

The identity, then, already has translated from job to job, multiple times over. “He brought a lot of his same motives here,” guard Daivien Williamson says. “It’s pretty much basically the exact same thing as it was when we were at ETSU.”
