Dante Cook
Jake Trantin
Dante and Jake each had one of the best (2009 for Jake, 2010 for Dante) seasons in recent memory for a linebacker. Unfortunately I do not think either was healthy for the rest of their careers. Cook in particular was an incredible athlete for the FCS.
I might also consider Wes Steinman here. I always thought he was underrated because of who he played with (Trantin, Cook and Franks), but didn't one of the NFL teams pick him up on a free agent contract and put him through camp?

Didn't WMSB/we already do LBs?

Jude Waddy?
I dunno, we've had some great LBs in my time but very few played great for multiple years. Luke & Nate were beasts their Jr years but not as great their Sr years. Andrew Solomon tackled everyone his Sr year. :)
Best tacklers in the past 20 years were DBs...Couplin, Caldwell, and DHC.

I scoured the internet but couldn't find the CAREER tackles listfor W&M (I know/assume Pocta is #1, by far)...they only have the single-season top-10 listed on the W&M Football website. Anyone know where I can find it?

Agree that Trantin, Rhodes, Cook, and Atkins all had tremendous starts to their careers, but none were able to punctuate their careers with tremendous senior campaigns.
I'm biased, but think I played with one of the better units (Moody, Waddy and McGowan) in the 90s.

That was a great unit, with Waddy standing out to me as probably the fastest LB we've ever had. With all the names being thrown out I'd add 1995 Yankee Conference DPOY Jason Miller. From my time I'd throw in Adin Brown (freak LB at that time at 6'4") and Dave Holland who spent time with the Montreal Alouettes.

Surprised I didn't see Miller on the top-10 single season tackles list! Was he a sack artist as well?

For some reason the 1970’s era of WM football always comes up short in memories, but how about the name Jim Ryan (class of ‘79)......very good LB who ended up spending 10 years in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and played in 2 Super Bowls.

Yes, can't believe I forgot Miller. Intense, student of the game, tackling machine. Waddy was legit 4.5 speed playing LB. Also, had the hands of a wrestler : )

Larry Pecatiello was an honorable metion AA in 1957. Great LB. Probably more known for his coaching at the NFL level.

Yes, right after graduation through 1968. Three super bowl rings with the Washington Football Team

Pec also played end on offense...another 60-minute performer. He was SC Player of the Week in the
monumental 7-6 upset at #10 ranked and undefeated NC State in 1958.

RE: WM Football All-Time Team: LINEBACKERS
Still wanted to call out Jim Ryan, a glaring miss on this list. 9 years on the Broncos as a starter and I think, two (maybe more) Super Bowl appearances. Not sure we have had anyone start and play in the NFL as long as Jim did. Maybe Christie or Kelso?
Jim was a quiet person on campus as I remember, seemed very nice. He was a pivotal part of the 1976 team that beat UVA, Tech, Ohio U and Navy, among others, in a very exciting football year at W&M. I think it was the last legitimate season we played a true D1 schedule and came out with a winning record, 7-4.
We had some great talent in the 70s which seemed to be overlooked and/or underrated in these briefings.
