As of right now, I would put the favorites as Wojo to Duke and Billy Donovan to UNC. Wojo needs to win in March (zero NCAA wins thus far) to be given the first crack at it (that could change come March); Brey is an ND-lifer; Amaker would be my runner up selection. Dawkins struggled at Stanford, future at UCF remains unclear; Capel just got hired at Pitt, and had bad ending at Oklahoma; Scheyer has zero HC experience; Bobby Hurley, for whatever reason, just doesn't seem like a fit to me - but who knows.

For UNC, Stackhouse's first year at Vandy has been pretty underwhelming. Perhaps in another year or two that changes. Wes Miller is a long-term wild-card. I think he need to move up to one more program to get more serious consideration. Haase was an assistant, but is a west coast guy. Donovan will not be at OKC forever, and had elite-level success at Florida. I could see there being a fit.

Stevens isn't coming back to coach college. He did not like recruiting and is much more "stimulated" coaching in the NBA. For whatever reason, if he was no longer the Celtics head coach, he would just take another NBA job IMO. That ship has sailed.

I feel like Duke will go through half of that list trying to get back to prominence.

He’d be my choice, I have no idea if he would take it or not. Recruiting wouldn’t be a problem though.

Everyone should be clear-headed here: Brad Stevens is coaching the BOSTON CELTICS.

This is the NBA equivalent of coaching, well, Duke or UNC at the college level. He's not *willingly* going to leave that job. People might as well be arguing whether Bill Belichick will leave the Patriots to take a college football coaching job.

To be sure, if Stevens gets fired for some reason, then it's obviously a totally different story. However, from what I've seen, he's vaulted into that top tier of NBA coaches where if the Celtics didn't want him, there would be another NBA team that swoop in to pay him top dollar immediately. I believe that it would take multiple failed stops at the NBA level for him to even consider taking a college job again. Stevens has a ton of NBA credibility currency to work with as of today.

Stevens is a rare case like Larry Brown. They’ve been successful at both levels, although Stevens has never made an NBA title game. He may be one of the best coaches in the NBA, but that’s a player’s league, everybody knows that. Great coaches flame out all the time. LeBron James should be the player-coach of the Lake Show, for instance. Does anybody really believe Tyronn Lue out-coached other guys to the Cavs’ NBA title? The NBA is unlike any major sport.

Like I said, I don’t know if he would take it or not, but recruiting wouldn’t be an issue. I also said he was MY choice.

One is most certainly not like the other. Larry Brown has coached for fifteen different schools/organizations, and left both colleges he coached at on probation and/or with sanctions. Brad Stevens, in the 20 years of being a coach, has coached for just two teams (Butler and Boston), and he most certainly did not leave Butler in shambles when he left either.

So Larry Brown wasn’t successful at both levels? Regardless of the details, they were both successful at the pro and college level. Sheesh.

Assuming Roy retires in the next two years or so ...

I'm on record as noting Wojo might be a very solid choice for UNC. Not sure he would want to leave Marquette given 1. that's a damn good job; and 2. his Duke background.

Wes Miller continues to improve UNCG but he's only 37. Still, he might be a solid choice. He would jump immediately to Chapel Hill.

Being a Vandy fan, I'm biased. But, I actually think JStack has done a very solid job here in Nashville and could be a candidate. He's the right age and has that NBA pedigree. This VU team hustles and cares and Stack has shown some solid coaching acumen and strong administrative moves with his hires. VU is missing Aaron Nesmith (who was having a first-team all-American year before an injury) and senior big man Clevon Brown (who was having a breakout season before injury). Those two losses killed our season. I feel Stack could have gotten the Dores to the NIT this year had those two remained healthy. As both a VU and Tar Heel fan, I would be torn if Stack left the Ville.

I also think Scott Drew at Baylor should be considered by UNC.

Stevens would be a fantastic hire — but I don't see him headed to Chapel Hill.

As to Duke ...

Wojo, Johnny Dawkins, Capel ... any would seemingly be a fine choice. I do foresee an ex-Duke player getting that job.

I think Wes Miller has tremendous upside and could even see the Heels giving him a shot (while it was a far different time, Dean got the Carolina job at 30, and he had no head-coaching experience). But the memories of Matt Doherty might still be too strong. Otherwise, if it's not Davis, it's probably someone outside the coaching tree unless Roy's still got a few years left in the tank and Haase or Stackhouse prove themselves. Mark Turgeon is from the Kansas branch, but if Ol' Roy gave his OK-dokey, would he be willing to leave Maryland?

Depending on when K leaves, it wouldn't terribly shock me if they promoted someone to be a transition coach, sort of like how Guthridge moved up after 30 years as Dean's lieutenant. You don't want to replace the legend, you want to replace the guy that replaces the legend. That doesn't mean someone very prominent won't bite at the apple, it's too great a job not to, but the top choices might choose to wait for a better opportunity. I think Capel would have been the more likely choice if he was still in the first assistant's chair at Duke, just for continuity. My gut instinct says Wojo.

Do Stevens and Donovan especially want to come back to college coaching?

Wes Miller....put it in the bank!

RE: Duke and UNC coaching changes
The difference is UNC has had coaching changes over the last few decades, Duke has not. I think its far more likely UNC stays playing at a high level and far more likely Duke has a drop off. No idea how long that drop off lasts but look at blue bloods who lose long term great coaches. UCLA, Indiana, UConn vs blue bloods who change coaches more frequently UNC, UK, Kansas.

I think Duke will have a drop off not right away but about 3 years after K leaves and will really struggle as in conference rivals take advantage and kick the blue devils while they are down.

RE: Duke and UNC coaching changes
If Mike Krzyzewski had retired after 2017, Northwestern's Chris Collins would have been near the top of Duke's list if not the top after taking NW to the NCAA's for the first time in school history. Now, no one's talking about him. I'm pretty sure Collins is more likely to be fired than Duke's head coach but as an Illini fan I'd sure love for him to leave Northwestern. They'll be back to being irrelevant in men's basketball once he's gone.
