Lol

The author of this thread (JMU 13) is a self-professed Rutger’s fan who has consistently expressed an over-the-top skepticism about CC’s recruiting ability. The title accurately represents their feelings about CC, but you’ll notice that with each recruiting success they’ve become quiet(er).

While the thread title does strike me as wrong-headed, the only way to truly gauge CC’s recruiting success and ability as a HC is to see what happens on the field. Heaven forbid CC coaches the team to anymore “mediocre” 14-2 seasons because there will be hell to pay. 07-coffee3

Well if we go by HotRod's rating methodology if we have too many 14-2 seasons in a row then that becomes our "average" year and thus it would be mediocre. You MIGHT just be onto something.

We will see , recruiting is where a lot of coaching can hide their flaws in college football esp on FCS level (Withers). In four years we will have our answers.

I'm not sure you could say that Withers' flaws were being hidden due to being in FCS. I think his flaws were being hidden because the team wasn't a bottom feeder when he took over. There was some talent there and I think that masked his flaws far more than the FCS label did.
If he had been head coach at a bad team I think it would have been obvious from day 1 that he couldn't coach.
If Texas State was a team that was winning a lot of games before he got there, I think it would have been similar to here. Probably would have won some games but as time went on, his flaws would have been more and more obvious.
JMU was in a much better state than Texas State was when Withers took over. At the same time, I think if Withers had stayed here even 1 extra year we would have started to see a significant decline.
I truly believe Withers was expecting a struggling season the next year and left while his stock was still pretty high.

I felt Withers recruiting ability was actually good, outside of the HS bridges he was burning. It was his (lack of) defensive coaching, and refusal to bring in good coordinators and act as CEO that were problematic. Attitude and personality didn’t make him very likable either.

Some of us just initially overlooked the fact that his FBS coaching was subpar and there was excitement driven by having a coach associated with OSU. I don’t think the flaws were ever hidden, we just chose to ignore them and/or hope they were correctable. He did bring energy and help us grow up as a program in some ways. It ended up moving the program forward a step or two once Houston corrected the locker room attitudes and defense.
