RE: Dantonio steps down at MSU
I'm not worried. Fickell may very well leave. This year or next season. Our program has done very well with the recent coaching turnover with one exception - the Inspector Clouseau hire. I'm going to resist the rumors and let it play itself out. Most of us have noted on this Board that our head football coach being desired by a top program is a good thing because it means we have been successful as a program. It doesn't mean we like it but we accept it for what it is. I trust Coach Fick to make the best decision for himself and for his family because of the type of man he is. Whatever he decides will be good enough for me. He's been nothing short of a fantastic hire, a great head coach and leader of young men, and an incredible program builder.

RE: Dantonio steps down at MSU
It would be sad for Cincinnati and the program if Fickell does leave a good situation here for a mess at Michigan State. I'd like to think at some point UC can be place where a great coach can be content - or at least content to not leave unless the new opportunity is extraordinary. I don't see how MSU in its current state is extraordinary.

Fickell is too good to take a new position that's a mess.

Does he commit without assurances head coach is staying? Is the MSU HC job too big of a step up for Marcus Freeman?

Industry sources tell us tell FootballScoop Michigan State leadership has some top choices in mind; but they would like to explore a full on (and diverse) search. We are told the top choices of some in leadership in East Lansing include Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi, former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell. While those are the three of the top guys on their list to consider, we expect others to be vetted as well.

I’ve always thought Fickell would be like Petersen at BSU and stay for awhile. I truly think he’s assembled a team that could run the table next year if he stays. So I’m staying positive. After that one gif.

Hoping he just uses the potential interest like Fleck did at Minn. to get a long extension with a huge buyout.

I still have a hard time seeing any Osu guy(player and coach) going to any Michigan school. People forget Dantonio went to South Carolina, coached at Msu, and was linked to Osu as a coach. He didn't have the deep Osu ties. Runs very contrary to that state's pride to hire a decorated Osu guy in my mind. Could be wrong, but i don't see it. Not to mention i'm not sure Fick wants to be in the same division as Osu.

Keeping Fickell would be a Q1 win, by the way.

If reports of Freeman turning down the Tennessee Titans LB coach position are true, makes you wonder if something is going on behind the scenes? Fick to MSU, Freeman promoted to HC? 05-stirthepot

How have we gotten this far without someone saying Kerry Coombs?

At his age and with his success you don't leave a coordinator's job to be a position coach anywhere. He's on the top step to becoming a head coach. That move would be the crazy train. Coombs was a lot older before he broke thru to the college game. He's on a different career trajectory completely from MF.

I’m totally fine with Freeman as HC. Would hope we don’t dilly dally on that offer and he heads off to Lansing.
