HCCC didn't have to go far to recruit him. Welcome aboard coach Whitley

How good were the safeties at Bridgewater College? Initially seemed a bit strange for us to hire a D-III assistant but perhaps he's just that good.

they went 10-0 last year, lost in 1st round, but most points they gave up was 22, average points against was 13

Big shoes to fill, at least on the recruiting side. Read a lot praise recently about Ryan Smith's recruiting ability.

More important for me is...

1. Can he coach Men's Basketball?
2. Can he coach Baseball?
3. Would he be open to coaching both?
4. Does he rent or have a mortgage?
5. Will he live in the Valley or in western Albemarle county?
6. What are his thoughts on UVA Orthopedics signage inside BFS?
7. Is he a P-Lot kind of guy or willing to hang out with us riff-raff over near the Convo?
8. Uniform fashionista preferences...gotta know whether he prefers sequins or lace on our purple jerseys.
9. What are his feelings about Houston letting Trott go?
10. Oh yeah, and can he coach Men's Basketball?

(just trying to get his views on many of the burning topics on this board)

He played at Va Tech and in the NFL, so kudos for him to go DIII to kickstart his career. I’m sure he’ll be good for the program.

PS: I played against a guy years ago that was a star in college and the NFL then started his coaching career with 4 years at a local DIII before jumping up to P5 and then NFL. He’s still there and is on his way to a long great NFL coaching career and will eventually be a Head Coach. Just like a player, if you have talent you will be found.

Looks like Coach Cig is willing to evaluate coaches for how good they are at their job instead of going off a pretty resume. Good on him.

Previous Head Coach wasn’t so open minded.

Yep, makes sense though. He was a DII coach until just 3 years ago himself, but has had enough experience at all levels to know how to find talent.

The NFL experience will go a long way with his recruiting ability as well. Kids are more inclined to listen to someone that knows what its like to actually make it.

Was curious about his background.

Whitley spent time with five different NFL franchises, originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent out of college. He had stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals. Whitley also played one season in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts. Whitley is a 2012 graduate of Virginia Tech

Cool so he's 0-1 against the Dukes. Never go against the Dukes. 04-cheers

Here's Whitley, #15, doing the walk of shame off the field on Sept. 11, 2010.

The Dukes had 2 Freshmen and 2 RS Freshmen on the 2010 team that were on 53 Man NFL Rosters this past season. I don't believe any of them saw any action in this game.

I prefer the sideline shot where Thorpe is using his crutch like a machine gun at the crowd.

Way to ruin a thread by bring up any mention of JT.

I genuinely liked that moment when I saw it on a replay like 6 years after the game! That guy had so much potential...

His 10 years at JMU were a roller coaster.
