When did that change?

been 6 years now this spring since Andre sported the purple and gold... same number of years he contributed to JMU's game! Both are hard to believe 04-cheers

I probably shouldn't do this, but...

MBB closer 2/22: 3125
WBB Closer 3/1: 3844

It me it felt like more than 4,500 yesterday, and absolutely looked like a thousand+ more people there than last weekend. Great crowd, that probably would have been north of 3500 whether it was the last home game or not! That's what a winner + some good marketing incentives will do.

Also felt the crowd yesterday was bigger than the announced attendance. In any case it was great to see such a large crowd and one that was into the game.

Gonna miss the Convo.

AUB here we come!!

Interesting statistically the men slightly held on to the average reported income for the year. I was not sure that would happen.

Men 2,435 a game.
Women 2,332 a game.

Now actual people at the game must be at least 2-1 advantage for the women.

2000-2001 Season

Men 3,926
Women 1,141

2005-2006 Season
Men 3,819
Women 1,550

2010-2011 Season
Men 3,721
Women 2,568

2015-2016 Season
Men 3,001
Women 2652

Current Season

Men 2,435
Women 2,332

If Kenny was still here, women's attendance would be higher than the men.

I agree. The box score on ESPN lists our capacity at 6426 and yesterday's attendance was 3844, IMO there is no way that there appeared to be 2582 empty seats remaining in the arena.

Curious what facts you could use to debate this opinion. I'll disagree simply based on the ceiling that Kenny seemingly reached at JMU.

What really helped attendance during Kenny's more recent years was having three local super star players, Newman, Burkholder and Mickens. It just seemed that attendance took a noticeable drop when they stopped playing. Lots of locals came to see players they had a personal connection with, and stopped coming when that ended.

Using that rationale, we should get quite the boost next year with Odenkirk joining the team. Not to mention the boost we also could/should get with the opening of The Vault.

I'm curious why everything I say you dispute. (he he) If I said a cloud was white, you'd ask why I did not think it was green.

Kenny made the NCAA 5 of his last 7 years at JMU, one time advancing it to the second round. That's an amazing run. I think Kenny was in the top 25 for portions of at least 4 of those years. One of the 2 years he did not make the Dance, he was runner up in the WNIT. Some seasons he had high seeds in the tournament, relatively speaking.

Do you not think if Sean had mirrored those results the last 3.5 years attendance would of been 100 a game more for the women? Without a doubt. Can I "prove" it. No, but common sense.... I think if Kenny had stayed at JMU, we would of likely made the dance at least 2 of the last 3 years.

Kenny really grew women's attendance, which paralleled his team's success.

I'm not slamming Sean, I'm simply pointing out the obvious how successful Kenny was when married to JMU.

Well, that is absurd - clouds are not green.

Kenny's attendance growth was Warrior pointed out was a product of his winning program and local star players. He did have a decent NCAA appearance track record but he came up short in the win column, as you said, only winning one of those. In the last decade it's been 4 one-and-done NCAAT, 1 NCAAT win, and 5 WNIT sweet-sixteen finalists or better. I would argue the deep postseason runs at home are better for selling/renewing season tickets and keeping fans coming back but I also can't back that up with numbers either. If Kenny or Sean had made the tournament 2 of the last 3 years but came away winless as we have been accustomed to I don't think that sells 100 more tickets. Maybe if we had a couple deeper runs... although we have had a ton of postseason success with the WNIT. (While the WNIT is fun for the home crowd, I'm here with you for the NCAAT games!)

Looking over the last 10 years of attendance records JMU seems to have been spared much moreso than many other programs downward trends. Looks like Sean's been in the 2400 average while Kenny was in the 2500 average. Actually I'm surprised the difference is only 100-200 in the average. With Kenny's local star players removed from the program, combined with the drop in student attendance, we could be in a lot worse shape. It was interesting to look at the numbers.

Sean's success has closely mirrored Kenny's. Hopefully he can break that NCAAT barrier this month. His team has the talent! Heck of a bad beat we had last year with the injuries to our starters.

The last three seasons:

Losing to Elon in the finals by 18 in 16-17,
and getting blown out in the semis to Elon by 23 in 17-18, and
Losing to the #9 seed even with injuries.

So you think "Sean's success has closely mirrored Kenny's."

We owned the CAA Kenny's last 7 years. Nobody can claim that has stayed the same after Kenny left.

Women's basketball had a ton of success before I started following it. I started watching when Kenny took over as head coach, as did many others as attendance shows. Kinda like I started watching Nascar when Joe Gibbs started a team.

I think Kenny did an amazing job at JMU. I think Sean has done some good things, but not yet at the level Kenny had the program.

Once again - I see clouds white. 03-cloud9

Guess we'll never know if Kenny could have beaten a great Elon team that completely owned us for both of those first Sean years (with all Kenny's players mind you)

As any JMU fan should know, it's the talent of the players, not the coaching. Coaching is over-rated.

I guess I am seeing some green clouds here. Last year's CAA debacle vs Hofstra had a number of worse case perfect storm scenarios that severely limited us. During the week prior to the game, Lexie practiced at point guard and an offensive scheme was devised around that. Smalls suited up even though she had not practiced all week and there was no plan for her to play. Our premier Point Guard Logan Reynolds was beyond worn-out by tournament time with her worsening back injury becoming debilitating. She had surgery on her back shortly after the end of the season. So when Barrier broke her hand after 47 seconds of play, we were in worse shape than most of the fans realized. Our on court players knew we were in trouble and played like it, a self-fulfilling prophecy of the worse sorts, shooting nervously with panic in their eyes. Smalls did try to play but could not use her broken hand and turned it over and returned to the bench after 2 minutes, a valiant but futile attempt to play. Meanwhile Hofstra played decent enough to win. Our bench was much thinner last year than it is this year for what that is worth.

A week later Smalls returned to play and the team had a week of practice fully knowing what our personnel would be. We win 4 games and beat Tech too, some pretty good coaching IMO.

About Elon beating us, that team was loaded with talent and was better than our talent. It was Elon's perfect storm of players in the good sense.

About practice, most coaches in most sports value game plans and practice so much that, if you don't practice, you don't play, or don't play very much.

I feel Sean has been mislabeled as not being able to win the big game. I hope that label is removed this year. (Although if we can't handle the press we may be surprised, with all the talent on this team, we are the most talented at turnovers too.)

I expect the women's team to get a bump next season with another talented local girl being added to the toser (Odenkirk).

If the men's team could add a local kid that played I think it would also add a bump.

Now imagine roughly double that crowd (7,500+) packed into the convo, with constant noise and intensity. That happened at least a few times with big games under Lefty, I was there. You were lucky to find a seat. It was ear splitting insanity, and it was great. Maybe someday the new arena will be like that.
