2020 Football Opener - @Stanford
With the 2nd signing period coming up, I couldn't help but look ahead to next fall's West Coast trip to open at Stanford. With the 2020 William & Mary Weekend scheduled for San Francisco in conjunction with the game, it makes for a very enticing trip for alum to hit the road.
As good a time as any for us to be playing them, as they are coming off a very disappointing 4-8 season, getting hit hard with injuries. They apparently have 30 players rehabbing in the offseason, with 20 of those post surgery.
They had 15 players enter the transfer portal, though their leading tackler just withdrew his name. Three year starter, 6'5" QB and NFL prospect KJ Costello, is arguably the #1 transfer prospect out there. Very difficult path for their redshirt junior players graduating and trying to get into a Stanford grad program to play their 4th year. Consequently, the high grad transfer rate.
They picked up a big commit in the early signing period with Emmitt Smith's son, EJ, the #96 rated player in the class.
Certainly a bigger, potential national news opportunity for London and staff than Howard's upset at UNLV.

That William and Mary Weekend in San Francisco at the grand Fairmont Hotel is not only heavily tied into the W&M-Stanford football game (our first football game ever west of Oklahoma whom we played in Norman in 1942...and won 14-7!), but is also the culminating event for the For the Bold Billion Dollar fund raising drive that is hoped to put us over that billion dollar mark.

Semantics, but Tokyo is west of Oklahoma. We'd fly west to get there, anyway.

Technically, we went to Japan twice.

I forgot the two Japan Bowls, but Stanford will be our furthest west USA college game and an important rallying weekend for Tribe grads.
By the way, think about us playing at Oklahoma in fall of 1942 on December 5th, the low point of WWII for our nation. Arguably the greatest W&M team ever went by train during that war year...and many of those guys were off to fight after the first semester ended. That team included Gerrard "Buster" Ramsey, Bob Steckroth, Jackie Freeman, Marvin Bass, Harvey "Stud" Johnson, Nick Forkovitch, Glenn Knox, aleb "Tex" Warrington and Pappy Fields and Bob Longacre. Fields was killed early in the service after he went in.
Ramsey is the only W&M player ever named first team major college AP All-American and is our only player in the College Football Hall of Fame. His uniform number 20 has never been worn by a W&M player since that year...we don't officially retire football numbers, but every W&M coach since 1942 has never assigned #20.
That team went 9-1-1 and lost only to a military all-star team composed mainly of NFL stars in the military. It was tied by Harvard, then a major college power
and defeated Navy, Dartmouth, Virginia Tech and, of course, Oklahoma.

There is a second W&M player in the NCAA HOF...Jack Cloud, of course.

Some people have been calling for Shaw’s (Stanford head coach) job recently. Would imagine a loss to us would be icing on the cake for that, even with him losing ~15 players due to transfers.
