St. Thomas needs a waiver first from the NCAA, but it does sound like they may not get it. Nobody in D2 will invite them knowing they will just go to D1 after a few years. Remember, St. Thomas got an invite, but they need a waiver first, or the school will not be D1 for awhile.

They have the best recruiting line for nearly any 18 year old in the country: "You'll get to live in La Jolla for free for 4 years."

And they have one of the top-10 recruiting lines for any parent of an 18-year old: "Your kid will get a degree that's just as good as UNC, Michigan, or UCLA."

SDSU will regret letting them move up.

I don’t think they had much say in the matter since they aren’t voting on Big West membership votes as a member of the MWC.

I think he means that if SDSU had joined the Big West (as they were going to, when they were signed on to Marinatto's goofy idea of a coast-to-coast "Big East" football conference) then the Big West would not have considered UCSD.

Still, I agree with jdgaucho's point that SDSU will regret that UCSD moved up.

For now, SDSU still is the hometown team. SDSU has traditionally been much larger than UCSD, and SDSU graduates tend to stay home. SDSU has more alumni living in San Diego than UCSD has total living alumni.

But that's changing. SDSU spun off its San Marcos satellite campus in 1989, and hasn't really grown enrollment since then. And a few years ago, the UC system targeted Davis and San Diego as the campuses that have room to expand.

Enrollment, 1980:
UCSD: 11,700
SDSU: 35,854

Enrollment, 1990: (before spinoff of CSU-San Marcos)
UCSD: 17,790
SDSU: 35,493

Enrollment, 2000:
UCSD: 20,197
SDSU: 31,609

Enrollment, 2009 (during recession):
UCSD: 28,418
SDSU: 32,817

Enrollment, 2015 (after recession):
UCSD: 32,906
SDSU: 34,524

Enrollment, 2017:
UCSD: 35,772
SDSU: 35,158

Enrollment, 2019:
UCSD: 38,798
SDSU: 34,881

That's crazy

How has SDSU remained basically stagnant for 40 years while everyone else is exploding?

They have run out of space. They had over 94,000 applicants for the fall of 2019, which puts them in the top ten in the country.

I read where they had $13.1 million in net income from the stadium in the first year. SDSU had a football budget of $15.5 million in 2017-2018. I don't think the stadium revenue and expense will be a part of the football budget, because it will be a multi-use stadium.

They'll use accounting hocus-pocus in the financial figures they release to the public to keep the stadium cost off of the athletic department's balance sheet. Every university that builds or renovates athletic facilities does that. But the university has to make the annual debt service payments every year, no matter whether they tell the public that the money is an athletic department expense or a general university expense. Internally it's a football expense, even if they tell the public otherwise.

I've seen CSU's new stadium and it's very nice, but the claim that they're making a net profit is silly. Sure, if they booked the naming rights and other sponsorships as first-year revenue they can say they made a profit that year, but those companies didn't buy naming rights for one year, they bought them for 30 years or more. And the non-football events they're putting in there -- the article mentions a wedding -- aren't going to pay top dollar in rent. The SDSU AD's claim that he hopes to share his new stadium with a soccer team is ridiculous, considering that they killed San Diego's chances of an MLS team by defeating the rival plan to purchase the stadium site. His notion that they'll have an event that pays real rent, like a Beyonce concert, a few times every month is equally ridiculous. But sportswriters print it anyway, because getting access to coaches and ADs requires you to print whatever they want you to print without pointing out that it's nonsense.

A new stadium is a big financial burden, period.

Fully funded hoops, baseball and volleyball (amongst others), a production studio built inside the hoops arena, all men's and women's home basketball games to be streamed on ESPN3 (they're in great shape for the ESPN+ transition and any tv games they can negotiate), increased recruiting budget meaning coaches have started going outside California for recruits...

As I said, SDSU will regret letting UCSD move up.

Also back when Dixie State and Grand Canyon were together in the PacWest they were the two top competitors in most sports.
They have a dinosaur museum in or near St. George. Interstate 15 makes it easy to get to Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and southern California.

Dixie State beat UNLV in basketball back in 2013.

Thanks for mentioning this. There’s a Dinosaur World near WKU but it’s make-believe and definitely not a museum.

More importantly, they are in first place in the Northeast Conference. Tells you a lot about the NEC.

The NEC is probably one of about 4 or 5 conferences that probably don’t belong in DI

I was wondering the same thing. Looked up CSU-San Marcos in the northern part of San Diego County. They have 15,000 undergrads. That's where the growth has been. Combined they've gone from 35k to over 50k.
