Coaching change played a part, too. Seems likely that a player feels little connection to a coach who has only been there for a few months and didn’t recruit him.

Igniting then old Houston-Miami rivalry!
This is great for Miami, probably their best QB since Dorsey. He’s going to have the chance to wing it all over the field.

Like I said on the ACC board, it's a perfect cultural fit. Nowhere better for a "Me First, piss on my teammates" player than da U.

Meh, we have that beat. In 2019, our stating quarterback AND our starting running back both decided to red shirt after four games. At least the quarterback, Art Sitkowski told the coach on a Sunday so there was a week to prep the backup. The running back, Raheem Blackshear dressed for the fifth game of the season, went out for warmups and then told the coach he wanted to sit out the rest of the season. He has since transferred to VaTech.

Houston had a bunch of upperclassmen redshirts. At least two starters who decided to quit playing.

You have a president jabbering about firing people if they go 8-4...big contracts or no, that's not exactly going to create a solid foundation or positive culture to sustain success.
And this is going to go on for awhile. There's no motivation for major conferences to expand right now. All of this posturing...is just that.

I hear you, Kap, but part of me feels like how many coaches take the 'piss on the players' approach when it's obviously NOT in the player's best interests to play in a given game? Also, did Kelly do pretty much the same thing at Clemson - the only difference being that he wasn't the starter? Those of us who grew up accustomed to players staying all 4 years may think it's a strange new world, but then again, I also grew up in a world of "retire with your first employer" and "employer-sponsored health insurance for everyone", too... all of which is gone. [And just to be clear, I'm NOT advocating what King did - just saying he's by no means an unusual case].

Can you name some coaches who have done this and haven't been roundly criticized and/or shunned from the sport?

You mean Kelly Bryant? Yes he did. We saw how swimmingly that turned out for him as well. Finished his college career having a mediocre season at a program that was banned from a bowl and then fired his head coach.

This isn't about staying all four years, this is about a player who quit on his team midway through the season not because of playing time but because the season wasn't going the way he thought it would and then lied about coming back. You want your QB to be a leader, and everything he has shown thus far indicates he's the total opposite of a leader.

Right. Its quitting in the middle of the year because things didn't go the way you had hoped.

They need to just get rid of that 4 game rule. Great idea, but people should know by now any rule they create is going to get absolutely abused like this. What a joke.

Im fine with the rule---I'd just like for it to be limited to just freshman (and maybe sophs as well).

I could see that- along with upperclassmen that have a verifiable injury.

I really wish they reduce the RedShirt rule to 2-3 games instead of four. I can't blame players and coaches abusing the 4 game rule. Still think King should have never made comments about staying at Houston. It is a bad look for tanking a season for the Coach and team.
