Any chance we get him back?

Wow, crazy but I doubt it. Can’t imagine we wouldn’t keep Hetherman at this point.

Sounds to me like their crazy fans/alums just ran off the best assistant they had. Maybe some talent and learning curve issues on D, but the O basically consisted of a good QB/receiver tandem hooking up a lot last year. They couldn’t really run the ball.

We do have a DL coach opening now. I know that would be a huge step down for him but any chance he takes it for a season or two?

I may be proven wrong, but I doubt Cignetti would want a guy from the previous staff. Plus, I doubt even more that Trott would even be interested.

Safeties too unless we filled that already. DB/safeties is more his prior specialty. I have my doubts about him coming back in that role, but sure wouldn’t mind. Safeties/co-dc would be great.

Wow - that is shocking.

Hate to see that.

Could/would they have forced Houston to make the change after only one year?

Yeah, surprising, even though ECU’s defense apparently sucked big time last yr. Didn’t MH back in Jan/Feb 16 like drive through a blizzard and crash on Trott’s couch in Richmond to get him to come to JMU?

Suspect MH is on a shorter leash than we thought, and was pressured by booster/admin unhappiness on this one. It'd be absolutely insane if he made this move on his own.

EZU may have even picked out the DC replacement for him. Much of the reason for his hire was because of DK and Shankweiler.

I see a Danny Snyder scenario where they micromanage MH into the ground.

Agree that there may have been pressure to make a change, even though I think it was too quick. Any FBS school can create a dynamic offense if creative & gimmicky enough. Just look at the old WAC, where everyone scored 45+ points. Defense, though, takes considerably longer to turn around-need several years when your talent base is substandard. When Trott came to JMU, he had good chess pieces. He just had to undo the previous bad chess strategy that had been used on them. At ECU, he had no rooks or queens to work with.

I may be mistaken......but isn't Mike Houston more of a defensive guy/coach than offensive coach. If so, if the defense is a major issue he owns a large hunk of it too. Coordinators only do what they do scheme wise with the blessing and direction of the HC. But anyway, Mike Houston is a great and honorable man.

Anyone think that Mike may be taking over the DC duties himself and just promoting a name within to hold the title?

Not sure about that, but I expect MH will be very hands on with the new DC.

Mike was a great motivator and management of a program. I got the sense he let his coaches coach. Yes, his background was defense, but he was not the DC. In watching ECU this year I was certainly seeing the issue more talent than coaching.

Agree. The games I watched they definitely looked outmatched talent wise, with the exception of a really good receiver and decent QB. Funny thing is their fans all thought Montgomery was a great recruiter. Maybe he just didn’t evaluate who he was recruiting well.

I think it takes at least another year or two to fix the talent gap and build stronger lines. If they can win more than 4 or 5 games this year it would surprise me, their schedule is tougher this year.

National D1A scoring defense stats prior to MH and BT's arrival at EZU...

2018: 37.3 ppg allowed (120th in the nation)
2017: 45.0 (130th...dead last!)
2016: 36.1 (110th)

2015: 26.0 (54th)

2019: 33.7 (111th)

Yeah, Bob Trott is the problem there in just 1 season. 01-wingedeagle

Quote:With Trott out, it means ECU's next defensive coordinator will be its sixth since the 2015 season: 2015 (Rick Smith), 2016 (Kenwick Thompson), 2017 (Thompson/Robert Prunty), 2018 (David Blackwell), 2019 (Trott).

Nice!

How is that working for them?

Exactly, one or more coaches had to go as a result of the Houston only winning 4 games (2 FCS games, 2 win uconn, 1 win odu). Very loyal of Houston to allow Trott to be that sacrificial lamb.

I know you dislike Houston, but nobody knows how or why this happened. I seriously doubt Houston just looked at the defensive results and said, "Bob you're gone".

Maybe, maybe not......but he sure was quick to throw him under the bus when as the numbers show, the defense actually improved. Defense and offense go hand in hand as we saw under Withers......if you cannot garner at least decent time of possession the defense will suffer.
