First JMU coach gone in this cycle
So it's official (Probably the worst kept secret all week) Ryan Smith hired as VT CB coach.

Andrew Jackson our DL coach is next to go to ODU

Do we lose any others??

Head rumblings about Birkett, but thought that was VT as well.

RE: First JMU coach gone in this cycle
Was initially a bit surprised at losing a coach to ODU. Yeah, they are FBS-blah, blah, blah. But going into this season, their assistant coach salary pool was only slightly larger than ours ( by around $100,000 total).

However, I just read where one of the items requested by their new coach was an additional $1million investment a year for the football program. Half of that would be directed towards the assistant coaches salaries. In the end, $ can overcome the stink of the program I guess. Not a good development for us though that they've got new money to throw around.

Absolutely right!!!! It is very distressing when these in-state programs can weaken us. I understand the VT promotion, even though that job may not last with Fuente on the hot seat....But ODU?!?!?!...when they can raid our coaching staff that is beyond distressing. I guess money talks.

With VT and ODU raiding our staff it just makes it more definitive that as an FCS school we are a BIG fish in a small pond. If we moved to FBS, with the 20 extra scholarships, we would be dominant at the G5 level and would be a bowl eligible team in the ACC.

You never know, there may be other factors at play such as location and relationships on that staff. Harrisonburg is pretty isolated so living there isn't for everyone. Some people would just prefer to be in more of a metro area, which is understandable particularly for younger assistants. I've never lived in the 'burg outside my time in school but I can see how it might not be the most attractive place for a young guy to call home. I'm 100% speculating on this, I really have no idea if that has anything to do with it. I just don't really look at it as ODU raiding our coaching staff.

Cignetti has been in the business long enough that I've got confidence that he'll bring in talented coaches to replace these guys. Of course you'd like to have continuity on your staff especially given the performance over the course of this past season but it's the nature of the business. We'll be OK.

Gotta strike while the iron's hot for these guys. AJ just coached a consensus All-American, Buck Buchanan Finalist, and likely NFL guy Ron'Dell Carter; and another possible NFL guy in John Daka. He goes pretty far back with Rahne as a GA at Penn State.

Looks like Coach Smith is about to be moving to Texas. Either that or he just got hosed.

Huh? VT made his hire official 4 hours ago, and he tweeted out that he was happy to be joining them.

Per Pete Thamel
Fuente is interviewing for the Baylor HC job. He is the leading candidate.

Nice move FU....Hire your staff then bounce.

Hopefully we don't get hosed by VT by having them raid us for our HC....That would be devastating

Some VT fans think they could land Luke Fickell if Fuente leaves.

I was coming here to comment something similar. This late in the HC carousal, I think Cignetti's name would at least come up in discussions for their new HC down in Blacksburg.

Fuente is staying at VT. Reports are he didn't get the job.

Speculation is all over the map. Everything from they offered and he said no to the interview never even happened.

It’s a circus show right now, at least on Twitter.

Even if Fuente did get the Baylor job, sure Cignetti’s name may ‘come up’ but there is ZERO chance VT would hire him.

Agree, not now anyways. Any P5 is generally not going to want an FCS coach, and it would take sustained success and championships to interest them. Maybe after we win 3 or 4 titles in a row that changes.

With the money VT pays they can poach a highly successful G5 coach or a coordinator from a top P5.

it stinks to lose assistant coaches, because ideally you want some continuity.

but we've lost coaches every single year. and there has never been a mass exodus of transfers or decommits.

i think that speaks volumes for what JMU has to offer. These kids like what they see beyond just the coaches and therefore want to stay.

The VT stuff is quite entertaining.
Now Fuentes is all on board at VT like nothing ever happened lol. Things have to be feeling pretty damn uncomfortable in Blacksburg right now. The fans are beyond pissed and they won't be forgiving. Donors are not going to support this guy. He's going to have to have an incredible season to bring the fans back on his side, and he won't.

As a JMU fan, grab some popcorn for this one.

I only watched I think 7 bowl games (5 of the big 6 (including the 2 semis)), Navy/KSU, and VT/EKU. I thought one of the Belk Bowl commentators said VT was only starting 2 seniors that game. This past season they went 8-5. 3-1 vs weak OOC lost @ Notre Dame (ND pulled it out of their arse to beat VT), 5-3 ACC, lost bowl game.

2020 will go 3-1 vs weak OOC (lose to Penn St). Could see them going at 6-2 or 7-1 ACC, as they don’t play Clemson or FSU. Get crushed ACC title game vs Clemson if they made it. I could see them finish 9-4 or 10-3, or make and lose the ACC game and finish 10-4 or 11-3. Don’t think amy of that would get him fired.
