RE: Hofstra (Thursday - 7 PM); Northeastern (Saturday, Jan 18 - 7 PM)
Northeastern trailed by 16 at Hofstra, Northeastern went up 1, and Hofstra won. Northeastern went up 16 with 9:58 left, you went up 2, you went down 2 in regulation and 4 in overtime before winning 76-74 in overtime. Northeastern entered third of 353 Division I teams shooting free throws .813. Tonight they shot 14/22 = .636, and it cost them. They lowered their season percentage to .798. It was the first time Northeastern missed at least 8 free throws since December 30, 2018. Tolefree led you with 17 points. Okauru had 16 points, 10 rebounds to lead all players, and 6 assists to lead all players. Northeastern had only 6 assists on 26 field goals, which is 23.1 percent. They entered with assists on 52.4 percent of their field goals. Roland's 38 were more than the rest of his team combined and more than your top two scorers combined, while Okauru had as many assists as Northeastern. Phillips scored 14 and shot well, but he had only 1 assist, 4 turnovers, and fouled out. Gadsden missed his only three and made all his twos and free throws to score 10 before fouling out. Sims only scored 8.

Three of the CAA's games had winning shots in the last 10 seconds. Charleston beat Hofstra with 9 seconds left, Delaware beat Elon with 5 seconds left, and Okauru had a tying dunk with 2.5 seconds left and you held on after Roland had a halfcourt shot off the back rim to end regulation, and after a long replay and meeting of the refs, the out of bounds call was changed to give Northeastern the ball under your basket with 0.6 seconds left, and Roland missed. He still scored 38, with Vaccaro said is the record for Trask Coliseum. Northeastern managed to allow a triple-double and win and then have a player break the venue points record and lose. In their 100 years, I wonder if Northeastern ever had a week like that. Roland had at least 38 for the third time this season, which is the second most behind Marquette's Markus Howard, who has done it five times. Howard has 2,434 points, and his 385 threes are more than Blizzard's CAA record.

I also want to point something out for those who do not believe Wilmington supports basketball. UNCW had incredibly solid, if not league leading, attendance tonight to support a 2 win team that hadnt won since Thanksgiving. Not only did they show up but they were rowdy.

People are looking for any reason to support this program and now they have a great one

Roland was unconscious. But that last shot wouldn't have counted if he had made it. Ball didn't leave his hand in time. With .6 seconds left you can't catch it and bring it back behind your head, then shoot. But he sure made some difficult shots. Very impressive.

I had the opportunity to speak with Marcus Green and his mother (Gloria). I worked with Gloria for many years. They recently lost their husband/father. So I was able to express my condolences. Such a great and grounded family. Marcus looked like he could play today.
It was hard to recognize Callahan. He was skinnier than when he played.

Can't catch and shoot at .6 so that was a done deal unless you lob the ball at the basket and knock it in. The pass play before that was a terrible idea and it could have been a disaster.

Tolefree brain fart. Possibly one of the dumbest basketball plays I've ever seen. He threw it to literally the worst spot on the entire court at the worst possible time. Their only chance to win was an inbound pass to that exact spot. I almost fell on the floor.

They've got a week to work on some things. And inbounds plays will be a top priority.

Who ever accused Wilmington of not supporting basketball? I may not like Hofstra having to travel south to Wilmington and Charleston, but that's where the best attendance is. The best geographic fits for Hofstra are the Ivy League (impossible) and Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC), but those conferences average under 2,000 attendance.

I'm not saying Roland shot in time, but you only need .4 to catch and shoot.
