"the preseason poll will likely be (not how i think it'll be)
7) temple- returns a decent core from decent team (all stars on offense, but takes some hits on defense)"
Agree that Temple may slide into the lower tier of teams next season.
However,
the idea that "all stars on offense" will be returning isn't 100% accurate. Some key athletes (e.g., Senior starting RB, & WR/RB Isiah Wright) played their final season in 2019.
Beyond that, the notion that Temple had more than a small handful of "stars" on offense is very questionable, given that Temple's offense was abysmal for a bowl team, being ranked #86 in points scored in 2020.
The only reason why Temple managed to win 8 games was that they played one of the weakest schedules in the AAC (S.O.S. ranking: #102).
Seven of Temple's 8 wins were against teams ranked #64th or lower:
#211 Bucknell (home game)
#105 Maryland (home game)
#100 GT (home game)
#119 ECU
#72 USF
#64 Tulane (home game)
In hindsight, it shouldn't have been a surprise that (6-6) UNC was able to defeat (8-4) Temple by 42 points.
.
Their
QB situation is less than ideal, they're losing a number of players on offense and defense,
recruiting has been so-so, and
the 2019 team wasn't deep enough to begin with.
Add to that the fact that
their 2019 OC had an extremely poor track record, in his two years as NIU's co-OC in 2017 and 2018,* - - coupled with the fact that
he will remain the team's OC in 2020.
In retrospect,
Temple's HC appears to have made a very ill-considered decision to not only bring his NIU co-OC with him to Temple, but to elevate him to the position of OC.
The problem with Temple's offense goes beyond the OC, however, because Temple's HC had, at NIU, been his team's other co-OC in 2017 and 2018. Carey's main expertise, prior to become a HC, had been as an offensive positional coach, and he has clearly considered himself as one of the two top experts on his teams in offense coaching in 2017 through 2019. Thus,
Temple's two top offensive coaching "experts," who have had a miserable track record over the past three seasons, will be returning to coach the team's offense in 2020.
*
2017: #93 ranked in total offensive yardage (379 yards per game).
2018: #121 ranked in scoring (20.1 points per game).
.
NOTE: In the case of both of NIU's co-OC's (Uremovich and HC/co-OC Carey),
their main previous experience as offensive coaches were as offensive line coaches, though one had a short stint as QB coach. This may help to explain their lack of sophistication in designing and executing plays, etc.
NOTE: The limited success that Coach Carey had, by making their way to a bowl game, is mostly attributable to the fact that many of Matt Rhule's recruits remained on the team in 2019. That will no longer be the case next season.
