Right there with you but trying to turn the corner looking ahead to next year and an exciting group. No way to put a silver lining on it, but it does feel like JMU as a program is much more of a sustainable contender than ever before!

Can't wait for September 5th!

How much experience do you return on your d-line? I know you lost d-ends...not sure on the interior. And, do you guys do a lot of rotation or do they play all/most downs? Just wondering for experience. Your d-line definitely was the strength of the team and the best in the FCS.

Both tackles return. Have some good depth there.

Will be untested at DE, but have some highly rated recruits and transfers waiting in the wings. Likely a (large) down grade on the surface.

Our key #2 depth guy at DE went down with a season ending injury and missed the whole season, so it depends on how he comes back. We have a stud freshman and the Minnesota transfer coming in as well so it won't likely be Daka/Carter but it could still be very good, but I think we'll be at that top level again in 2021/22.

Our interior DL are both going to be in the discussion for All-CAA next year and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them makes an All American team.

I re-watching our first drive. Then started watching their first drive. Got to the 3rd play - 3 & 11 when Trey ran for 30 yards and turned it off. Still too painful.

Such a big difference between winning that game and losing it.

We lose we are clearly the 2nd best team over the last four years. (1 Championship & 1-2 versus NDSU)

We win and we arguably are right with NDSU the last 4 years. (2 Championships & 2-1 versus NDSU)

Yeah, they had the reverse, but it was really we could not stop Trey on the ground. I just can't believe these players and our coaches could not contain him more. He's great, but the defensive coaches did not have the team ready for his running ability.

I've rewatched the game. Just kept noticing missed calls....

For example, on Lance's first run on 3rd and long, blatant missed block in the back on Word.

Lance's last TD run, massive hold on our DB. Even turned our guy around.

Had to stop watching at some points b/c I was livid.

I was a bit shocked just starting to re-watch the game my emotions started to elevate. Re-watching that game effected me more emotionally than watching a live regular season game.

Good info...thanks. Just glad we don't ever have to face that d-line again. I'm sure that will be a phrase I say again in the future, though...

DL (really the front 7) has been consistently one of our strengths for years. I would expect any time you see us you'll be facing a stong group of d-line and linebackers.

Yeah, there was a lot of holding by NDSU but they weren't getting called so they used what was given, they've done that a lot this year, clearly coached to exploit those advantages. Other than some of those PI calls and non PI calls the officiating was pretty consistent. The forcing our receiver out of bounds pissed me off. That's a text book call, arm extended, no interpretation necessary when the official in 5 feet away.

Yeah, I would have to agree...thinking back to our first meeting in the playoffs. Your d-line has been consistent. I would say this year's d-line was the best I've seen, though.

Carter and Daka were pretty ridiculous, they're certainly leaving some big shoes to fill. That's one area I'm confident we'll always reload, as others have mentioned, but gotta expect some drop off there.

the starting four was maybe the best.

but we lacked depth big time this year. those four rarely left the field. who knows what plays that wear and tear had an effect on.

in past years, we could rotate 6-7 guys of quality.

Yeah, no doubt. We had a great one in Tuska...but then it was crazy that you had two like him. I don't know enough to say how they rated individually vs Tuska...but them together were way better. Just crazy how good they were. Couldn't imagine playing against you guys without a very mobile qb.

I was impressed that NDSU had the depth on defense to platoon lineman. They would sub four at a time. No wonder they were still fresh in the 4th quarter. I felt like we were playing P5 team.

We've been rotating like that for years. We learned very quickly after joining the MVFC that you need to have depth on the D-line to survive the conference grind.

I read the other day that Tuszka played 35 snaps per game this year, about 57% of our defensive snaps played.

It helps not only later in the game, but later in the season and in following seasons when you're younger players already have valuable game experience (and not just mop up duty against other teams' backups).

This is the least we have rotated in years.

Rotating is how you reload in future years.

Remember, Black at DT and Terrell at DE would have probably been in the rotation. They got decent, meaningful playing time last year before leaving in the Spring/Summer. We really lucked out that none of the 4 starters on the D-line suffered serious injuries.

i have no knowledge whatsover, but i suspect both those guys left because they were P5 transfers who couldn't beat out our homegrown HS recruits (Greene, Atariwa, Daka) for starting positions.

Transfer U what?!?

If a player is in their fourth year of eligibility and not a full time starter, they may decide the time and effort are no longer worth it. College football is a huge commitment.

Not everyone who plays football loves it. Some guys are just blessed with size and use it to either get an education or make a living on Sundays. For these men, football is work and not a game. They go to work each day at a job they don’t necessarily love but it is a means to an end.

It should never shock anyone to see players leave prior to exhausting their eligibility. This attrition is another reason why recruiting is so key and so is the culture of the program. People don’t always leave to play somewhere else. Sometimes they leave to do something else.

Obviously on the basketball side we had some huge losses of talent transferring under Brady. Other than with Matt, it does not seem we've lost many key players (Basketball or Football) to transfer.

Who were the biggest transfers we lost, except under Brady, in the last two decades in Football and Basketball?

Question is to everyone - it seems in the transfer era we've fared very well in retaining our key athletes in Football and Basketball. The coaches obviously deserve some credit, but I think the JMU community deserves a little more of the credit. It's an addicting university and campus.
