RE: Sadly everyone is playing for 2nd next year..
Did anyone ever report ratings for FCS playoff games versus FBS bowl game ratings for this season?

I couldn't disagree more. If we couldn't take it in with two plays from three yards out with Latrele or Latrele leading DiNucci, then I would have been OK with the loss. The passing play called made as much sense to me as a field goal attempt.
I was ok with a pass play there, just not that one. Two players in one area with a guy throwing across his body, should’ve run play action hitting either of the Stapletons. Everyone calling for a run, but easy to second guess and if we fumble the same people question that strategy. And this play was one of two 2-point plays they drew up, so even if they punch it in on a run, they go with this same pass for the conversion.

-Higher probability of an INT than a fumble.
-Had 2 plays to score the TD from the 3, so go with the run on at least the 1st play.
-Would have had 1 play to score the 2 point conversion from the 3, so a pass play would have been more acceptable on the 2 pt conversion.

Right, so if you can’t pull off this play when everyone including the defense thinks we should run the ball, going to it for a 2 point conversion when they expect a pass wouldn’t work any better either. Again, I was ok with a pass play there, just not that one. Polk wasn’t much of the factor for a while at that point and you have the Stapleton brothers on fire, find one of them on a mismatch but not way off like that, something across the middle we’re Ben can tuck and run it in if able. You throw the ball there it’s got to be either catchable or high and away, not a pick 6 because you’re slinging the ball 30 yards in the air for a 3 yard out and it’s easy for the defender to jump the route. Sometimes when you get stopped you have to tip your hat to the opposition for executing better; this wasn’t a great call, but it was one of the two 2-point conversions they practiced and were going with. I was at the game and haven’t had the luxury of watching a replay yet and probably won’t until this weekend.

This blows! Let’s move up now! NDSU has got this locked down for at least two years.

Wow, this sounds like a surrender post. Let’s just f’ing beat the Bison from now on.

I agree. What does moving up do for us? Yeah, I’m pissed today. Really pissed. However, how amazing was this run? I would MUCH rather be here than having our best possible season end with us vs (fill in some team w a 25-30 national rank) in the Menards Shovel bowl somewhere in the Midwest that no one will go to.

The sooner everyone realizes that the FCS Championship game in Frisco, TX isn't even on the same level as the Menards Shovel Bowl the better.

#1 vs #2 with 3 weeks of lead up..... 17K people. And that's with knowing there was a 90% chance your team would be there before week 1.

I didn't used to feel his way, but the past 2 years or so I've really changed my mind on it.

As another poster has said, there is nowhere to go in FCS except down from here. Hopefully the resolution is being worked in the background.

Respectfully disagree. App St had an amazing season, maybe their best ever, we’re ranked 20th at one point and had 21k in New Orleans for their bowl this year. Granted, they played 1-2 “marquee” teams during the regular season, but an iffy schedule the rest of the way (and a ton of travel = $$$). I hear your argument, just not seeing that much upside and don’t want to become ODU

App State ended the regular season ranked as the third highest G5 team in the country. The result was a bowl game that drew 21,000 at a neutral site and played on Saturday night on ESPN

Weber State ended the season as the third ranked FCS team. The result was playing a national semi-final game at a home field site (JMU) in front of 10,000 people on a Friday night on ESPNU.

As someone who has slowly moved from "I'm fine with staying FCS" to "its time to go to FBS," you cannot point to one thing in FCS that comes close to its equal at the G5 level.

I'm not naive to think that G5 will bring us sold out stadiums, national TV appearances and beating Clemson in the national championship...but there is nothing I can think of at the FCS level that when compared to G5 FBS is superior when comparing apples to apples.

why did you compare App State's end of season game to our 2nd to last game or a Weber state game for that matter?

that makes no sense.

Because I'm comparing apples to apples. It was Weber's last game. We are not App State in this scenario.

If you finish third in the FCS its because you made it to the semifinal. If you finish third in G5, you make it to a bowl.

I'd say 30-40% of the fanbase wants FBS.
Alot of small town north dakota people think being top dog is the coolest thing ever.

President & AD have said they don't want to move up unless something breaks apart with the power 5 and G 5.

Personally Ive been pushing hard for it since Carson Wentz days! I think the President is close to retirement age and the AD is from Stony Brook and just happy to be here.... so there's not motivation for those 2.

if Mountain West gave us an Invite tomorrow or the American NDSU would say YES right away.

Mac or SunBelt probably not.

Stadium is 19,000 so it meets fbs requirement, but if NDSU built a 30k on campus stadium it would help.
Football Only would probably work easier since travel costs will be biggest deterrant

At what point are the fans/supporters ok with being the big fish in a little pond?

Even our fan base is getting tired of beating up on teams throughout the season. At what point does "how much are we going to beat them by" stop being fun? So assume NDSU has 13 championships is 14 years, I believe some of the pride starts to decline when everyone knows you're playing "down"?

Regarding the FBS vs. FCS discussion:

Playing FBS allows better games over the course of the whole season.

Joke about silly bowl games vs. FCS playoffs, it's about the money: https://fanbuzz.com/college-football/bowl-game-payouts/

Geez....how do I say this nicely......at some point folks just start to sound like a bunch of whiny, spoiled, entitled brats.

- When JMU wins it is not good enough b/c it is not against who we want to play or the game was not entertaining enough or we won by too much or we won by not enough
- And god forbid, when JMU loses the sky is falling and everyone SUCKS!!!

This is my point exactly. I here these criticisms frequently:

"You think if we move to FBS that people will all of a sudden care about playing Florida International or South Alabama?"

Ok, if you take the most obscure and furthest Sun Belt/CUSA teams to prove your point, then thats an argument you can win. If you compare apples to apples...South Alabama and FIU are bigger games than Albany and Stony Brook. That would be comparing apples to apples.

"Playoffs are better than Bowl Games"

Really? Then why do most playoff games draw crowds of about 5,000 around the country? Hell, JMU's quarterfinal and semifinal games averaged around 11,000 people. National Championships are nice but we've played 4 in 50 years of football and even those are in front of crowds of 17,000 and in a soccer stadium. If you guarantee we'll be in the national championship every year I might consider it but that's not realistic to expect that and even then you are competing with the lowest bowl games in the country.

"I want to play for national championships"

So do I, but like I mentioned above, we've only done it 4 times in 50 years. And thats pinnacle FCS. When you compare pinnacle G5 you get UCF beating Auburn or Baylor. You get Boise upsetting Oklahoma in one of the greatest games ever. A few years ago you get Houston beating Florida State in the Peach Bowl. I'll take any of those accomplishments over an FCS championship.

"FCS has playoffs like it should be"

True, but FBS has regular season games that matter and against more relevant competition. Imagine this schedule (assuming we are in Sun Belt which I'm using as what many consider the smallest FBS conference):

Regional FCS (Richmond/W&M/etc)
AAC team (Temple/ECU/Navy/etc
P5 team (VT/UNC/Penn State/etc)
G5 team (Charlotte/ODU/Marshall)
South Alabama
GA Southern
GA State
App State
Arkansas State
Coastal Carolina
Louisiana Lafayette
Troy

Any way you spin it that is better than playing FCS/CAA schools that have 1/4 our budget and 1/10 our fan base.

Exactly, if JMU won 5 or 6 straight and they still refused to move up, I wouldn't be bragging, I'd be embarrassed. It is getting tiring watching us make a mockery of the CAA and landing in Frisco 3 out of those 4 years. There is simply nothing left, for either NDSU or JMU, to prove at FCS. We do not belong in FCS and I wish they could expel us both for our own good.

If we were to become ODU at the FBS level, then we would be like ODU at the FCS level.... except we aren't!

We are nothing like ODU. They suck! We don't. We will be at or near the top of any FBS conference we join, even the AAC where we may not be #1 or #2 in our first season, but we will definitely be in the upper half.

ODU didnt suck in FCS though. The Monarchs were top 10 and are undefeated against JMU. ODU then moved up and went to a FBS bowl game and won that. ODUs problem was their coach couldn't recruit (or coach) at the FBS level. ODU will be back soon enough (hopefully). I hope JMU moves up, but theres no reason to think JMU wont have the same problems most move ups have (Charlotte, WKU, ODU, GSU, FAU etc). You get through it and then get good again (hopefully). Or maybe you guys would be the next App St. But thats a high bar, and for every App St. there are a dozen ODUs.

Its not all rosy on the FBS side at the G5 level either though. Look at it this way. JMU had three games on national TV and got to play for a national championship. At the G5 level, you will get most regular season games streaming on ESPN+, an occasional P5 team at home, and if you have a winning season you get one game on national TV, often at an odd time , against another G5 school. And maybe a road game at a P5. Even App St, who was a top 25 team and first place in the SB, played UAB in a bowl few cared about. I truly believe the top of FCS and the G5 are about the same in quality and opportunity. The pro to G5 is the opponents you play, the pro to FCS is more winning, better rivals, comparable budgets, and the chance to actually play for a championship.

Granted, they played 1-2 “marquee” teams during the regular season, but an iffy schedule the rest of the way (and a ton of travel = $$$). I hear your argument, just not seeing that much upside and don’t want to become ODU

They didn’t suck and they beat Mickey Matthews’ Dukes twice(which should’ve been at most once but Mickey thought he should run clock the entire second half against a team with no defense and a crazy offense), but they certainly weren’t what JMU is right now and has been under Houston and Cignetti.

I truly think JMU was the better team vs WVU but lost due to some overly conservative coaching and a few mistakes early on in the first game of the season. I also truly believe JMU would’ve beaten most G5 teams this year with this roster and if you threw us in any G5 conference we would’ve finished at or near the top. Maybe an ODU fan doesn’t agree with either of those, but I doubt many JMU fans disagree with the second so I don’t understand why they think we’re going to add more scholarships and recruiting advantages then suddenly become worse. We might not become App State but I seriously doubt we’d become ODU... And I also think ODU will turn things around at some point.

RE: Sadly everyone is playing for 2nd next year..
Dolly you say 4 championship appearances in 50 years- what kind of muddies that stat is that JMU has been to 3 championship games in the last 4 years. I guess some may think JMU May revert to the mean and be a perennial playoff team in FCS but championships and championship appearances can not be taken for granted. I think there is a reason why JMU has made 3 of the last 4, has barely lost any conference games or FCS games or games for that matter over that period. It’s transcended coaches and groups of players to this point with plenty of talent remaining with both groups for next year and the years after that.

JMU has reached another level. I’m an FBS guy and I’d be cool with a move tomorrow and get behind it but I think the context is important because it is pretty big time- the type of football JMU played at the beginning of the year vs WVU and at year end on Abc vs North Dakota State. That reflects well on our University and provides a lot of value. I can see why the powers that be aren’t in a rush.

It's because every program with a pulse moved up except for NDSU.

Who’s moved up in the last 3-4 years that hasn’t moved up before then?

Yes, once they all moved out, JMU became dominant...you don't see a correlation?

Pardon my ignorance but is that on their radar at all? Maybe as a football-only member somewhere?

Looks to me like you're the second biggest fish in the pond.
