MyBB MBB vs FIU
ESPN somehow has the 8-8 Owls, currently on a 4 game losing streak, as a 1.5 point favorite versus an 11-5 FIU squad.

Must be some impressive wins among those 11 victories. Or maybe it’s the Owls enormous home court advantage?

In any event, I hope ESPN is right. The Owls badly need a win.

Go Owls!

MBB vs FIU
Rice is one of three teams in the conference to have won fewer CUSA games than its played home games (“down one break” as opposed to “holding serve”). Three teams are “up a break” (FAU, LaTech, and UNT). The other 8 are “on serve”.

Hope we can hold serve this afternoon.

MBB vs FIU
Massey has Rice favored by 2 (while ranking Rice 50 spots behind FIU).

KenPom has FIU favored by 3.68 on a neutral court, so should be roughly even at Rice.

My system ranks Rice favored by 5 since they are “due” after the losing streak.

Before the last game someone said he tweaked something in practice.

Unreal half so far. Great to see the offense playing well but the defensive activity has been phenomenal. Easy to be unmotivated when you're 0-3 and there isn't much of a crowd but good to see everybody creating their own energy.

42-30 at the half. Let up a bit towards the end but still probably our best half in conference play. Love how aggressively Parrish is attacking.

Great to see Mullins shooting with confidence. 61-46 Rice. Still need to finish it but by far the best performance we've had so far.

Where has the Parish of the last 2 games been the past 2 years?

FIU misses chance at 4 pt play and a couple of 6 pt plays/possessions before the Owls finally get a rebound. Owls hit 3 in return to push lead back to 79-67.

Peterson back out with 4 fouls. But FIU can’t get to within about 10.

Terrific balanced scoring-- 5 now in double figures, with Olivari at 9 points. OUr 19 assists already must be a season high. Really good distribution.

Parrish being this aggressive gives us an element that was missing. Just a really good all around game, though the defense was really poor for the last 10 or so minutes.

We're definitely capable of beating anybody in the conference and we're probably capable of losing to anybody.

Congrats to the boys on a job well done. I think they're 3-0 (or maybe even 4-0) now in the games that I've missed. Sorry but I'll be there for the next 2 home games.

Good job Owls! And happy birthday Ako!

Now, if the Owls can consistently play like we saw this afternoon....

Rice hit 10/17 3 pointers in the second half. That plus FIU missed free throws kept us with a comfortable lead. Rice, however, gave FIU far too many plus one opportunities.

RE: MBB vs FIU
Ako with a season-high 34 minutes. His playing time had gone down in recent games, but I think they realized he needs to be in there (and hitting his 3-pointers) for Rice to have a chance to win. The other important takeaway from the game today was Parrish was moved into the starting lineup, and Murphy came off the bench (if he regains his shooting touch, he's a starter but even today with a good rebounding and assist effort, he was 2 of 7 in 3-pointers).

We have the next 3 on the road again (all in a 5-day stretch too). But we can certainly win the USM game on the road, and I think if Rob comes back, maybe we can steal another game somewhere. Once we get past the next 3 road games, we have 5 of 7 at home (with our students back too). So I'm hopeful we'll win perhaps 3 of the next 5 to close out the January slate of games.

And I'll predict that once Martin comes back, he'll move into the starting lineup. They like to have a good scorer come off the bench, and if Murphy is that guy, then it won't make sense to keep both Martin and Murphy on the bench at the start of the games and second halves.

RE: MBB vs FIU
This was a fun game to watch from beginning to end. The intensity was strong and very solid ball movement. Josh Parrish's ability to break down the defense really paid dividends. Peterson is beginning to act like a point forward, which is allowing him to showcase some real leadership on the court, which is nice to see. Hopefully this is a lesson for the team of how to win in conference by starting strong and closing the deal. While there is no "go to " performer that can carry the team when the rest of the players have an off evening, there is overall a stronger level of play on average for this team than I have seen in a number of years. Yes they lost two games they should have won in conference so far and one or two OOC games, but I expect that they will finish a few games above .500 with significant upside potential for future years, because while they lose Addison Owen, Ako Adams, Robert Martin, Tommy McCarthy and Tim Harrison as graduates, there is ample talent to replace them (only two logged starters minutes) and the Owls will get to add another (hopefully strong) recruiting class. (all assumes that they do not lose players during the off season to the transfer portal....).
