Coaching Tree
I had no idea. Ryan Smith, our former star DB, is the JMU Safeties coach and pro scout liaison. Another former player who earned his bones as a GA at Penn State. Scott Boone really looked after his players.

Also, strongly rumored that he will be named the new DB coach at Va Tech after JMU's season wraps today.

Stinks. His DB’s are usually coached very well. Even coached Moreland into the NFL.

Well, Ryan has ran into some really bad luck. VT head coach Justin Fuente is interviewing for the Baylor HC job tomorrow.

Hopefully, he already signed a contract. If so, he's free to return to JMU and double dip.

Interesting, I don't know if I'd consider Baylor a step up from VT. They've had a string of successes in recent years and have a flashy stadium, but they are not the powerhouse their fans think they are in Texas football. VT has a better gameday atmosphere and is a pretty strong recruiting draw in this part of the country. They're hampered by some weak ACC teams and should be doing a lot better than they are. Maybe there's some good money behind the Baylor offer, and Fuente probably feeling his seat getting warm.

Fuentes is from Oklahoma, so maybe it's just wanting to get closer to family or something like that. I'd say that moving from a basketball first conference to a football first conference may have some reason for his interest also

Looks like Fuentes did not get the job and will be staying at VT. Obviously he said he decided to stay but the timing of how it played out suggests it wasn't offered. Smith's new position seems safe.

Calling the VT defense tonight. That level of experience is excellent.

Ryan's defense looks great through the first half. JMU's DB coach just a year ago.

In the first post Bud Foster game, Ryan's defense looked great. Forced 2 turnovers in the win.

I may have missed something, but why was Ryan calling plays? I assume they have another DC, etc.

Insane experience -- hope he's the next one coming up after Joe Brady.
