RE: MBB vs. FAU
At this point in the season the playing rotation still seems to be in flux, which is a bit surprising. Having Rob Martin on the bench in street clothes really hurt tonight. Having Crisler starting and getting twice as many minutes as of Fiedler at the post has me confused. I thought Max had earned the starters minutes but I guess Zach has performed better in practice or there was something about this specific match up that made Coach Pera tweak the line up. Olivari has obviously made an impression because he is now getting more minutes than Payton Moore.
I really hate when the Owls are at the charity stripe and the coach puts no one on the box to attempt to get the offensive rebound. I understand that it makes the team a bit vulnerable to a fast-break team but Parrish is not a good FT shooter and the Owls were only down 3 with Josh at the line with a minute left. Needless to say the ball hit the rim and landed exactly where an Owl should have been on the box. I thought that was a bad decision by the coaches.

I have never understood not putting anybody in the box on free throws. Ideally, I think you have one on each side. That still leaves two to drop back to defend the break.

Their bigs destroyed our bigs (our comeback only happened when we went with a smaller lineup). That was probably Parrish’s best game as an Owl. We need a similar effort for the whole game Saturday that we showed in the final 12 minutes.
I'm not going to blame Peterson for the turnovers - he played his heart out for 39-plus minutes. We really need a win to get off the conference schneid. I still think we're going to get some wins other people may not expect. The talent is better. I think we lead the country in number of home games we play when the students aren't in school.
The comeback was actually pretty amazing as we seemed to be mentally down early. Their bigs absolutely dominated, but when we went small, they moved from that, IMHO surprisingly. The transfer of QMB really showed in this game and at least one loss earlier in the season. He doesn't leave, this could be quite the breakout season as the young centers are just not quite there.....

RE: MBB vs. FAU
Rice takes a lot of 3-pt shots. Rice lost by 7 @WKU and shot 27.6% on 29 3-pt attempts. Rice lost by 5 vs. FAU and shot 30.8% on 26 3-pt attempts. The other team consistently makes runs when Rice's shooting is cold and Rice can make some amazing runs when the shots are falling. If the team shot just a little better, that would help a lot in these close games.
Last year the team shot 34.8% and right now they are at 32.9%. Not a huge difference, but that extra basket falling in some games and not others is pretty huge when Rice has been involved in a LOT of games that were within 2 possessions in the last few minutes. Last year, Rice was #59 in 3-pt attempts and #154 in 3-pt shooting percentage. This year, Rice is #16 and #190 respectively, so taking more and making fewer. The team needs to either start making a few more 3-pt attempts or maybe think about taking fewer of them. Or getting the ball into the hands of guys making more of them.
For comparison, here are individual players 3-pt percentages from last year and this year (from highest to lowest percentage this season). As you can see, Peterson has improved a good deal (he was very streaky last year, seems more consistent this year) while Murphy and Martin have dropped a lot.
Adams: 37.9% to 36.8%
Peterson: 29.8% to 35.9%
Murphy: 42.1% to 35.6%
Martin: 42.6% to 31.5%
Mullins: 30.2% to 25.0%

I think this is a good question to ask Coach Pera on the next coaches show.

And yet it appeared that essentially none of the large number of Houston-area Rice students seemed to have come to last night's game. Can't blame that on international students who are not sports fans, can we?
(I'll take it back if, in fact, a lot of Houston-area students actually did attend, but sat in the sideline seats rather than the empty student section.)
