RE: MBB: Delaware at JMU, 1/9, 7pm
I didn't read to see if there was discussion about this, but for the first time Christmas didn't start, albeit Jacobs got in foul trouble and played 2 fewer minutes than Christmas.

The CAA tournament is March 7-10.
Season ticket orders are due March 16. Reseating takes place in April.
If a coaching change is made, people will be making a decision to buy or not buy season tickets without knowing who is hired as the new Men's Basketball coach. JMU Athletics may want to reevaluate this ticket order timeline.
Why do they have a deadline? If it's the summer, obviously the whole season isn't sold out, and some more people want season tickets, wouldn't it make sense to sell them season tickets as opposed to the remaining tickets being available only one game at a time or on partial plans if you offer that. If you want the same or better seats, it makes sense to have a deadline, but if you want season tickets and are willing to sit anywhere, why not offer that right before the season?
The announced attendance was 1,976.

Very well stated.
I’ve been saying it for years too. With the talent we had we could of won the CAA this year with a very good coach.
Talent is as good as anyone in the CAA
Coaching is worse.....

Why are there so many dumb decisions made with basketball? Deez - you are 100% correct. Why did the set the deadline when interest is at an all time low?
It seems like when it comes to Men’s basketball JMU can’t get out of it’s own way.
The likely new coach will hopefully spark increased interest or at the very least hope.

We discussed this at the end of last season and the season before. The lack of vision and the willingness to keep a bad coach has led to zero momentum in the ticket sales/donation drive for the new arena. It is now too late and you can’t undo the damage in time. JMU will be opening a $100 million arena after 4 years of self inflicted punishment. Brilliant.
We can still hold out hope that JMU wins 3 straight games in the tourney to go dancing and gain fans back.

I am sure it will be possible to buy season tickets after the March deadline, seating in April.......but this early deadline is the folks who get the first choice of seating.

That is no surprise.......students still gone, football is in texas, many fans were either in Texas, enroute to Texas, or leaving this morning.
But you are correct, very light crowd.
I am going to call my Duke Club Rep (Scooter) next week some time to discuss tickets and ticket prices at the new arena......I have been a season ticket (4) holder for years and now the price point has moved dramatically........You really want me and expect me to pay this much more for this. I mean I have been supportive through a lot of bad basketball and my thanks is to pay more for worse seats. Come on, really.
If they don't make a coaching change, I won't be surprised if in year one at the new arena we get that same number. If they decide to keep Rowe, they will lose money. They will lose fans and it will take a long, long time to bring fans back. It's disgusting what the admin is doing to MBB.
I was planning on going to several games in the new arena, but I refuse to give this program any of my money or time as long as Coach Rowe is head coach.
I feel bad for the players and also Coach Rowe. You know they are all working their tails off every day to try to be successful. Coach was hired into a bad situation and after year two it was clear there was little chance for success. Sure, Coach needs to be replaces but how about Bourne? He's the one who hired Coach Rowe, pretty much setting him up for failure. What's to keep Bourne from another bad hire? If football wasn't contending for a NC the past years, would he still be here?
Since Bourne isn't going anywhere, the next MBB search needs to be done by outside consultants, use their recommendations and don't allow CK to have any say in the decision other than salary cap pre-determined.

While I agree, there is a similarity between the two. Neither can overcome bad coaching.

I don't like seeing Rowe dragged through ****. This is on King and Bourne for chasing Brady off with no plan for men's basketball whatsoever. Rowe did what any of us would have done, took the chance.

If JMU does not beat Drexel tomorrow, they are looking at a likely 1-7 start in the CAA.

We are a bottom of the conference team/program at this point- no denying it- we will play the first night and have yet another losing record.
Take heed in what W&M did. On the heels of our Football championship loss the admin needs to focus on identifying candidates that can make significant impact and bring change quickly to our men's program. $500K+ investment for a new established coach with a track record. They need to focus on identifying coaching candidates now (the way they have football coaches at the ready when guys leave JMU).

What’s Alger’s salary? There’s your JMU MBB salary cap.

It’s in the $500k range. Possibly $550k...hiring a MBB coach for $500k is definitely possible.

Algers comp is reportedly $428k. Cignetti makes $425k and will likely receive a raise. $500k is realistic for men’s basketball especially if the hire is someone who has had success at the D1 coaching level-
I.e a Bryce Drew type.’

This is where we would see if JMU really wants to win in division 1 basketball.
Steve Forbes is an excellent candidate.
Will JMU outpay little East Tennessee State?
Before you answer, check out what his current contract is.
He makes $650,000 plus incentives.
If you answer that JMU will not outpay little East Tennessee State, then what are we doing building a $103 million arena?
JMU athletics budget $51 million
E Tennessee State athletics budget $23 million

That's what confounds me.
Per Jeff Bourne: "The Convocation Center will help us grow our JMU brand and place us in a position for relevance on a national stage. This is a significant initiative in our continued efforts to establish a culture and facilities that will allow our men's and women's basketball programs to compete at the highest level of Division I athletics."
That was in 2015. He backs that up by hiring a man with no head coaching experience? Not even D3, probably not even a high school team. THAT is growing our brand? Hoping the 'local boy with zero experience steps into a D1 job and somehow makes good' thing pans out on the cheap? The highest levels of Division 1 athletics is Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, Villanova. We still can't beat an average team in the CAA.
Why are they so damn frugal about hiring a great coach and paying him handsomely to do what isn't being done now, winning, consistently, and getting 6,000 fans to show up for each game. They are out of time to turn this program around for the new arena. Even if there is a new coach (and I don't think there will be, Rowe will be back even if he goes 4-14 CAA and gets smoked in the play in round), that new coach will have to rebuild, recruit and get the players who stay to buy into his ways.

Would be curious about whether JMU recruited Painter. I’m not sure what coordination if any exists between sports at JMU but his brother plays on the JMU football team. Maybe he really connected with Delaware and their coaches, believed they were a better destination etc but it would be disappointing to learn if JMU wasn’t even involved here.
It’s like in sales for a big organization when one unit helps another unit - I wonder if that type of communication and teamwork exists across college athletics programs. We could have used the assist with Painter and he would have really added something to the JMU front court.
