And the current recruits haven’t been alive to see Miami even win a conference championship, a NY6, or anything of substance, much less a national champions. Their titles are ancient history at this point.

It always degenerates, no matter the topic, but the OP was onto something in posting this. In a very specific way, it's a meaningful metric. UCF is definitely the main school most of the G5 can look to and say, "hell, if they can do it, a lot of us could too if we just invest properly, build the right way, and catch a couple of the right breaks." If you had told me 10 years ago that a big city "commuter school" (other than Louisville and Houston, who feel a bit different due to their histories) would be headed to the B12, I would have had a hard time believing it. UCF has done the impossible, and I'm sure there are plenty of cool Knights fans that I'm happy for.

This in all likelihood may be the one thing holding SMU back.

Most popular sports/school speciality license plate sales in Texas (yes, they even offer some out-of-state schools):

Thru Dec 2021:
My Plates - Top Five Collegiate Plates (In-State)

1) Texas A&M University*
2) University of Texas
3) Texas Tech University
4) Texas Christian University
5) University of Houston

My Plates - Top Five Collegiate Plates (Out-of-State)

1) Penn State University
2) University of Oklahoma
3) University of Alabama
4) Louisiana State University
5) Oklahoma State University

My Plates - Top Five Sports-Themed Plates

1) Dallas Cowboys
2) Texas Diver
3) Texas Trophy Hunters Association
4) Houston Astros
5) I'd Rather Be Golfing

*Texas A&M has lead the state in specialty license plate sales since 2010...even selling more than the Dallas Cowboys.

RE: UCF passes Miami for logo license plates
Reminder...(at least in FL), these specialty license plates are fundraisers for each University (or charity) as the $25 extra cost ANNUALLY per year goes to the University General Scholarship Fund. ($25 extra renewal fee per year always goes to the Univ Scholarship Fund too).

Example: UCF's 35,138 plate sales/registrations in 2022...means $878,450 was added to UCF's general scholarship fund this year.

Well? They are a TN thing as well...

I have to finish ten homes in next two weeks so my brain is fried

Meant vanity plates. I don’t really see much of them

I looked at getting SMU plates and it was $200/year with SMU only getting 1% so I send the money direct.

When did you last look? You can get an SMU plate for $35/year. It goes up to $90 or more for personalized plates. I have UTSA personalized plates on my vehicle, but still donate money yearly to UTSA as well.

Unless I miscounted, Texas offers 30 plates from out-of-state schools. Pretty large number, I think, though I'm not sure how other states compare.

Btw, UTSA had personalized license plates many years ago, but they were hideous and very plain. I refused to buy one. We finally got new ones this past year, but I'm not sure how many there are out there right now. Certainly nowhere remotely near what UCF is selling though.

If only the old posts on Rivals from years ago were retained when ECU fans were proposing to send fruit baskets to the Big East presidents and commissioner to help their case for membership.

Clearly your comment is relevant and well thought out.
Actually yes. And we have a ton of license plates because we have 200k alumni in the state. Now please put my fries in the bag.

DYK...prior to the Fall of 2016....UCF was the only Div I School in Florida that used their academic seal on their license plate while all the other Div I Schools used their athletic logo...which helped sell more license plate for them because T-Shirt Fans (non-alumni) also bought them.

UCF's great long-time President at the time, Dr Hitt, just refused to use UCF's Athletic Logo on license plates...even though everyone knew UCF would sell more license plates...which would mean more $$$ to the UCF General Scholarship Fund (where the extra $25 per year per plate goes to).

Fortunately, Dr Hitt finally relented and UCF started selling their athletic logo plate in August 2016.

Old UCF Plate:

Yea, I was at UCF from ‘06-‘10 when all of this was heavily debated.

In defense of Dr Hitt, it didn’t matter prior to 2003 because UCF Athletics was apart of the university. The student fees brought in a lot more money than license plates. UCF Athletics didn’t have any real success to that point to justify the Athletic logo on license plates anyways. 0 Bowl Appearances, 0 Conference titles. (I’ll concede the Daunte era was good but UCF had just made the jump to FBS and the Daunte era also had the McDowell Cell Phone Scandal which burned a lot of trust between school administration and the athletics program)

UCFAA was established in ‘03 and it signifies that UCF is going to start investing in the athletics program again. A lot facility improvement plans started in ‘03. Hired a splashy coach in George O’Leary. Apart of the original 2003 plan was for the OCS and the logo rebrand in 2007. So it didn’t make any sense in 2003 to put athletic logos on license plates because we knew a rebrand was around the corner.

2007 was the most logical time for the license plates to transition. UCFAA had a lot of loans with UCF because of the facility improvements. I don’t think UCFAA asked for the license plates back then. It wasn’t till the student and alumni support became overwhelming that Dr Hitt and the BoT decided to allow UCFAA to have the license plates.

People make Dr Hitt out to be greedy over the license plates but I don’t feel like UCF had earned it. It wasn’t till we won some conference titles and some bowl games that UCF brand was large enough to justify the athletic logo on license plates. Alumni blew it out of proportion because it was something they could easily point to and say UCF was mismanaging the athletics. All the other athletic programs had license plates and UCF didn’t.

The license plates shouldn’t have been a big deal. It certainly doesn’t merit discussion on the annual basis. The Dungeon loves talking about it because it feels like the message board victory. Dr Hitt was a huge supporter of the athletics program and really paved the way for the UCF popularity boom.

Is it a metric to compare the fan bases? Sure, it’s the only way to include Florida, FSU, and Miami’s T-Shirt fans to UCF fans. I feel like we should stop calling them T-shirt fans because we are getting to the point where the local Orlando resident is a UCF fan. We have T-shirt fans of our own now and we need to stop assuming everyone is an alumni. More T-Shirt fans come with the P4 status because the brand is growing.

Neither of you are correct. The money has always gone to the university's scholarship fund, not the athletic department or UCFAA. And the roadblock was not Dr. Hitt but rather Dr. Holsenbeck, who was a VP and a very influential advisor to Hitt. He felt that the uniqueness of the Pegasus logo drew more interest and curiosity than an athletic logo would. Obviously, we all disagree with that, and the proof is in the pudding. But that was logic for keeping the Pegasus plate until Danny White decided to fight that battle with Holsenbeck...it had nothing to do with athletics "earning" the logo. It was simply a matter of the AD fighting for it as a marketing tool, while previous ADs avoided that battle since none of the money comes to UCFAA.

And to be fair to Dr. Holsenbeck, who passed away earlier this month, he provided incalculable benefit to UCF. He was wrong on the plates, but he was a tremendous champion for the university in delivering funding from Tallahassee. UCF fans owe him a great deal of gratitude.
