Thoughts? Owls?

Matt Rhule is a very competent guy with very high aspirations. He interviews well, and then performs well. His past may be highly predictive of his future. I could see him succeeding at Carolina. The jump to the pros may be rocky at first, but ultimately it is about having a QB who can take you places.

Rhule knows his limitations and hires better people around him. Compare that to Jerry Jones who hires people then gets in their way. Happens a lot.

I can understand this move.

Come on! If you're going to go college you gotta go Lincoln. Man this sucks.

I'm not sure Lincoln's style of offense would work at the NFL level.

As a Panthers fan, I am underwhelmed with this hire. While I think Rhule is a very good college coach...I'm just not excited with testing him in the Pros.

Anybody who can win big at Temple and Baylor can win anywhere. Both are hard jobs.

He won at Temple, I wouldn’t say he was dominant. Won 1 American title.

The Big12 opening kind of worries me for Heupel.

Maybe when Al Golden started. Now? Not so much. Proof is in the NFL pudding.

Look, I'm not saying that Fickell's never going to leave but if he does, with his B1G/O$U pedigree it would be some place far better than lowly B12 Baylor.

Baylor is where Temple level coaches go.

Baylor is where Temple level American conference champion coaches go.

But Fickle will be a B12 coach when Cincinnati gets added, right?

FIFY: But Fickle would be a "lowly" B12 coach IF Cincinnati ever gets added, right?

LoL. He isn't going to Baylor. It's nothing against Baylor. It just isn't in Ohio or close to it. He's a different type of coach. If he's good enough he'll move up one more time, and that will be his final move.

I think Fickell and Heupel wait for better jobs over the next couple of years. Both have stacked teams coming back. Fickell can wait for a B1G job to open up like Michigan State or Michigan (oh my, that would be something) or the USC job given his connections with the AD. Heupel similarly can wait on jobs knowing he has one of the top 2 FR QBs in the country coming back. His buyout doesn't drop from $10m until after the bowl game next year, and we should win 10+ games again. Another year or two of 10+ wins with his own players will boost him up for legit jobs.

Baylor makes sense if you just want to chase the money. But if you're interested in going to an elite job where you can legit win an invitational championship, it's not on that level despite their performance in recent years. Maybe you can put together a stacked a team here or there, but I doubt any Baylor team ever could match up with the 3 non-Big 12 playoff teams this year.

I think something similar was said about Scottie Mo. "If you can get 8-9 wins at Duke..." ...then you played an ACC Coastal schedule.

Stephen F. Austin, UTSA, and Rice will agree.

I like the way Temple played under Rhule and think he will transition well to the NFL, but who in the world would give an unproven coach a 7 year deal?????!?

Rhule is a solid coach and brought Baylor out of darkness. It was a place with no scholarships and people jumped ship left and right and he truned it around in a short time.

He will be fine.

I think dykes will be the one to go if any. Because of the Texas ties he already knows the area and administration's love that.

He was on the Giants (Assistant offensive line) coaching staff in 2012.

He has coached almost every position on a football team, he will do very well.

I would be much more worried about your guy. Fickell knows that he cannot recruit to Baylor with his connections. It would be professional suicide. Fickel did not leave for WVU or Louisville. I think the job has to be in the Big Ten or Notre Dame.

Color me not impressed. Not an issue with Rhule really but you fire a coach who's 76-63 with 4 playoff appearances and a Superbowl appearance to hire a coach who's never been an NFL HC before.

I was personally hoping for McCarthy but maybe Rhule will work out. It is pretty rare to take a college HC and them not get fired after a few years in the NFL.
