RE: Future Sun Belt Tournaments
Not a bad idea.

I'd prefer a neutral site IF we can attract decent crowds to the tournament. But if there's no way to achieve that I'd rather just have the 1-seed host too if logistically possible. Attracting crowds to a neutral site at least seems to be being addressed if we're looking to move from New Orleans to one of those cities in the proposal linked above at least.

New Orleans has been a disaster for attendance. I m not against a neutral site IF the conference finds one that increases attendance significantly. I have my doubts if that can happen. At least letting the regular season champ host would bring in fans.

1. 10 teams make tourney. 1st round is 7 hosting 10 and 8 hosting 9
2. 2nd round is 6 hosting 7/10 winner and 5 hosting 8/9 winner.

That gets it to 6 teams. Regular season champ hosts these 6. 3 day tourney
Day 1– 3 hosts lowest remaining seed and 4 hosts 2nd lowest remaining seed
Day 2– Semis with seeds 1 and 2 hosting 2 remaining teams with 1 playing lower seed
Day 3– Champ game

This gives seeds 3 and 4 a bye and seeds 1 and 2 a double bye. It rewards regular season champ with hosting tourney.

This would work something like.
Monday of Champ week — 7/10 and 8/9 game
Wednesday— 5 and 6 host games
Friday thru Sunday: 6 remaining teams play for champ at regular season champ

Some might argue for 11th and 12th team being in tourney but can anyone really say these 2 bottom teams deserve a chance to be the Belt autobid?

It’s not a bad idea, but logistically, it would be difficult. Especially if the top seed is determined at the final game of the season. This year, that would give the conference, cities, campuses, and teams 11 days for the men and 7 days for the women to prepare. Likely, at two different campuses. If Troy happened to be the top men’s & women’s seed, are there enough hotel rooms there for 10 teams, officials, volunteers, and fans? Or do they have to stay an hour away at Montgomery? Do the arenas want to keep the schedule open all weekend for the arena just in case they host, and possibly pass on a lucrative opportunity to host a concert or something else? The vast majority of D1 basketball conferences, if not all of them, schedule their conf tourneys at a predetermined location over a year in advance. Probably for good reasons.

While I never say never, you're not going to see the tournament move back to campus sites.

With the way we draw in this league, even putting it on campus sites won't be great and would be a disaster if the home team gets knocked out.

This is pretty much what we have now, except it’s a Final Four and not Final Six. Troy has hosted multiple baseball tournaments, so I’m sure they could handle it.

The conference leader on Feb 15th should have first shot at hosting.

No, it’s not what we have now. We now have a pre-determined venue that is set well over one year in advance. Giving someone 11 days notice to hold a 6-team tournament is a big task.

Ok back it up a little. The conference leader on Feb 15 or Feb 20 hosts the 6 team tourney. I guess my main point is having the top team host will increase attendance. Surely the top team on Feb 15 will be in the top 6 and in all likelihood in the top 2-3 if not the regular season champion.

If a host in announced say this year after Feb 15 there would be 4 conference games left. AfterFeb 20 and there would be 3 conference games left.

If nothing else we can all agree I think that it has to be moved out of New Orleans

Right now 3 games separates 1st place from 10th place. What if the leader on Feb 20th loses their last 3 or 4 games and ends up in 7th place and doesn't make the tournament? You have to consider all scenarios, because this can happen.

HonestlyI think 11 days notice is enough but if as some of you think we need more back it up a little. Feb 15 or Feb 20 or even Feb 25.

Well, I'm glad you think it's enough time. Have you ever planned a D1 conference basketball tournament? How about 7 days for the Women's tournament? Pensacola is having difficulty meeting the deadline for just the application to host the tournament with 1 1/2 months time.

Along the same lines, what if on February 15 there is a tie involving 2 or more teams for first place that can’t yet be broken? How would we break the tie so the host site can begin prepping for the tourney? There is just no way this option would work.

I like this. Or previous season's tourney champ or highest ranked team... Or highest bidder... Or maybe at a foreign military base, USO style... Or just be done with it.

WBB is hosting 4-team pods; MBB is having home sites. Other conferences do it; it’s very doable.
