RE: Future Sun Belt Tournaments
Why not rotate through campus facilities like most of the other sports?

Having it anywhere but on the campuses is a huge mistake.

true. there is little interest in sun belt basketball outside the fans of the schools involved in the tourney. the southland conference has their tourney in Katy at the Merrill center, a high school arena that seats about 5000. it is practically empty for the games. the houston airport is a long way off and all the motels in the area charge entertainment and county stadium fees, so it is not that good an experience even if you were one of the diehard fans who was inclined to fly across country to watch your team there.

I agree with the last few posters, rotate it through the conference. I don't see the point of doing it at a neutral site. It is neutral because no one is there to see it.

the NBA-D league played a season or two there. And eventually the city may figure out what they are going to do with that building, which may include demo.

I say we just go back to either highest seed host or if every team is involved, rotate it around the league.

I forgot about the D League. I don't think the city is going to demo, they don't have the money to tear it down. There was enough uproar about the future renovation plans with downtown restaurants, Mardi Gras organizations, residents around the Civic Center area.

I don't have a preference of on campus vs neutral site for basketball. Track/Volleyball/Soccer probably isn't a big deal because of low attendance, but there could be some bickering/complaining about how one school is chosen for the basketball tournament. There may be some fans that go every year because they look at it like a destination/mini vacation and may not go anymore if its at places like Jonesboro, Monroe, Boone. Our baseball tournament is headed to neutral site this upcoming season (Montgomery.) However, I remember when I was 8 or 9, stAte hosted the American South Basketball tournament, and I really enjoyed that.

Having it on a predetermined campus site is really not "fair", although I certainly didn't mind having it in Little Rock, for several years in a row, a while back. The "fairest" on campus site would be to have the regular season champion host the tourney. However, apparently the logistics of doing this are difficult. I don't have an answer, but it is clear New Orleans has not worked attendance-wise. I'd like to see a different small to medium size city get a chance to host. My original post was an attempt to find out if anyone actually has good info on a likely site or sites that are being seriously considered.

Yeah, logistically, it would be impossible to wait and have the regular season champ to host. Campus football stadiums are not going to have anything going on in December, and setting up a solitary game, a week in advance is doable. But setting up a multitude of basketball games for a tournament with just a few days notice is not feasible.

Atlanta and Dallas are the cities most likely to have alumni chapters of all or nearly all SBC schools. Any local support of an SBC tournament is probably going to hinge on local alumni of participating schools.

I'm not sure alumni will make a big difference in tournament attendance. No doubt there are plenty of ULL, ULM, and USA alumni in New Orleans. LR, ASU, Texas State, UTA, and Troy are in neighboring states and probably have alumni there as well. Sure didn't help attendance. I just retired, in September, and am now able to attend tournaments wherever they are held. It's a lot harder for working folks- except this year's 2-day affair. Still, the costs of traveling to New Orleans and staying at area hotels, is prohibitive for many considering, at most, you will see your team play 2 games. Actually, I'm hoping both the LR men and women make it to New Orleans which would definitely make it worse my while. Felt good about the women's chances, all along, but now believe the men have a chance as well.

Why do you want our tournament to look like a middle school game?
After years in New Orleans, it should be obvious to all that we cannot draw fans to the large cities. We should schedule at the school locations based on conf. standings with maybe the last two rounds at neutral site.

I'd like it in a smaller city with a really nice 5000 seat arena. Maybe we could come close to filling it with local support and traveling fans. Hot Springs was a great atmosphere the year we (LR) made the final. Hot Springs is actually a tourist town with the race track, casino, bath house row, restaurants, etc. Not sure what other centrally located city would fit the bill. While I am going for the basketball it is nice to have other things to do.

I wonder if Huntsville, Alabama may fit the bill. Von Braun Center includes the Probst Arena and a lot of banquet space that may allow for more than one court like we had in Hot Springs. Seem to be things to do, but it would get old after more than a couple of years. I'm ready to try somewhere other than New Orleans. Southaven, Mississippi is a 30 minute drive to Tunica and just outside Memphis. I think Conference USA or maybe the Ohio Valley held their tournament there in the past. The Landers Arena holds 10K and has a convention center attached (not sure it big enough for a second court).

The powers that be have been touring various sites. Pretty sure they went to Pensacola around the time of our bowl game.

Cajuns are playing in a baseball tournament in Pensacola (the Diamond Invitational) in early March and I'm looking forward to the long weekend.

That's pretty great news. I'll be there when it happens. I haven't made a ball tourney since the SOCON.

RE: Future Sun Belt Tournaments
Pensacola might work but my plan is for regular season champ to host. Here would be my plan.

1. 10 teams make tourney. 1st round is 7 hosting 10 and 8 hosting 9
2. 2nd round is 6 hosting 7/10 winner and 5 hosting 8/9 winner.

That gets it to 6 teams. Regular season champ hosts these 6. 3 day tourney
Day 1– 3 hosts lowest remaining seed and 4 hosts 2nd lowest remaining seed
Day 2– Semis with seeds 1 and 2 hosting 2 remaining teams with 1 playing lower seed
Day 3– Champ game

This gives seeds 3 and 4 a bye and seeds 1 and 2 a double bye. It rewards regular season champ with hosting tourney.

This would work something like.
Monday of Champ week — 7/10 and 8/9 game
Wednesday— 5 and 6 host games
Friday thru Sunday: 6 remaining teams play for champ at regular season champ

Some might argue for 11th and 12th team being in tourney but can anyone really say these 2 bottom teams deserve a chance to be the Belt autobid?

That's essentially what we have now without reseeding and neutral location for final 4.

Yep. I would add reseeding to our present set up and 6 teams to the host site instead of 4. And regular season champ being rewarded with hosting final 6 teams
