RE: How many times has JMU defeated the #1 ranked team?
Went back to the '16 SHSU game thread for kicks ... none of us were acknowledging them as #1 ranked (we talked about #1 NDSU), and in fact were laughing at Soft Houston for making that claim themselves.

How many times has JMU defeated the #1 ranked team?

ASU (2008) the “comeback”
W&M (2009?) the “no completed pass” game
SHSU (2016) the “blowout”
I put a question mark around the W&M year only because I was too lazy to confirm the actual year (I’m sure BDK has the correct season), but W&M was ranked #1 coming into BFS, if only for one week before losing to JMU.
...and of course JMU will add NDSU to this list on 1.11.20, but I was curious if the Dukes have defeated other #1 ranked teams (rankings current as of the time JMU played them).
SHSU is a little tricky, they may have been 1 in one of the polls but they ended up getting the 5 seed. Idk if i'd group them with the other teams. Reminds me of a kennesaw situation where they were highly over ranked
I understand your point, but seeding isn’t ranking. SHSU was still #1 in the published polls when JMU demolished them.
Yes but I believe everyone and their mother knew that team was over ranked. Cant say the same for the other ones
Again, not debating that point. You could say the same about being overrated about several teams ranked #1 at the time JMU beat them (like W&M). This is a simple question asking who were the #1 ranked opponents at the time JMU defeated them, regular season or playoffs.
I thought we got at least one in ‘08(?).
Yea, ok. 08 was the App game I’m still pissed about having to skip. ‘10 was that no pass laugher against the ebirts

So it was ‘10 then? I couldn’t recall what year it was and guessed ‘09. I think it may have been the only time (one week at that) W&M was ranked #1.

I copied that from above, so took someone else’s word for it.
Don’t really recall each spec year by now, there’s been more than 30 of them...

Yeah, was definitely 2010. It was one week after an OT loss to RU, which was quite literally one of the worst football games I've ever seen. The offense was so lousy it is what spurred MM to go to heavy on the wildcat the next week.

After we beat #13 Virginia Tech earlier that year, we scored
10 points Vs Liberty
10 vs Delaware
17 vs Towson
7 vs New Hampshire
14 vs UMAss
10 vs Richmond
30 vs William and Mary, wildcat
14 vs Maine
Yikes. We should have passed less that year.

Didn't Dudzik play injured for most of that season.

So is this correct?
1992 @ YSU
2006 @ UNH
2008 ASU
2010 W&M
(2016 SHSU debatable)
2016 @ NDSU
2019 (season) NDSU (Frisco).
Edited: Removed 1985 GSU..

Lol, look at some of those early 90s food prices in the ads. Heck Papa Johns put at least 3 ads in there to make sure you didn’t miss it. No food ads through the internet (which was still in its infancy) then..Those were the days (now get off my lawn)..

Georgia Southern in 1985 was a young program and not No. 1 before a strong finish to win the national title.

Looks like the win against Georgia Southern doesn't qualify. The Breeze said they were 7th ranked.

I think we beat William and Mary in 1986 or 1987 when they were number 1.

When JMU played W&M in 2009 or 2010 it was widely advertised as the first time W&M was ranked #1. Could you verify that 86 or 87 date?

In '86 it's quite possible that they were #1 when we met. We were their 7th game and they were 6 - 0 before making the trip to Harrisonburg. They'd beat Colgate, VMI, Bucknell, Harvard, Lehigh, and Delaware. I cannot find anything mentioning their rank, but they were among the best of D1-AA. The following game they went to UVA and beat the Hoos.

W&M was ranked #3 in 1986:

They were unranked in 1987, when JMU was #5 for the first time in NCAA poll, and #8 in USA Today. Boise St was #11 in USA Today ranking.
The Breeze archives are kind of fun to peruse occasionally.

The only reason I recalled this vague memory was the fact that when Rip was coach, he had a wall with the few accomplishments that JMU football had up to that time (1993-1994). One of those listed accomplishments was beating a previously undefeated W&M team. I thought it said they were number 1 at the time, but it's certainly possible that the listing stated they were #3. Sorry Longhorn, my only citation is blurry, remembered direct evidence.

I love how only a couple of posters have mentioned the ‘92 Youngstown game and the youngsters completely gloss over it. That was a huge deal when it happened, at least for the fans like me who never missed a home game in the early ‘90s. Trey Weis clutch FG won the game. I listened on the radio from my bedroom at The Commons (now called something else). I think my friends were out partying and didn’t care. Not a lot has changed...
