William & Mary fired longtime coach Tony Shaver and hired George Mason assistant Dane Fischer. Every starter besides Knight transferred. That could have led to disaster, but the Tribe (7-3) has held its own, even leading much of the game at Oklahoma last month before losing, 75-70. Knight has enthusiastically embraced Fischer’s new style of play.

“Shaver ran more of a Princeton-esque offense with a lot of continuities and set plays,” Knight says. “With Coach Fischer, we just kind of go. The best way to describe it is that Shaver had the players run an offense, and we now have an offense created for the players we have.”

Knight also likes that Fischer’s style lets him show more versatility for NBA scouts. In his first three seasons, Knight rarely switched on ball screens but is now doing that often. He also has more freedom to launch from the outside and has already attempted 32 3-pointers after taking 41 all of last season. He has connected on 34 percent behind the arc and went 3-for-5 from deep in Sunday’s win over Fairfield. Fischer has also played Knight primarily at the 4 spot this year and has used him less than 20 percent of the team’s possessions at center. Knight played 78 percent of the time at the 5 last season.

Playing the 4 vs. the 5 is a distinction without a difference, I think. He and Van Vliet pretty much play the same position, and he gets more post time as well.
