It was certainly nothing like the bowls closer to home, but better than Boise, and Hawaii. That was a fantastic game and because the crowd was smaller it was kind of like everyone was a VIP. Got to hang out with Willie Roaf before the game. You knew those were the die-hards.
Hawaii attendance was basically player families only. Apparently Tech bought and donated a bunch of tickets though.
I didn't go to Boise and honestly don't remember the crowd on TV, but I suspect it was similar to Hawaii. Boise and Hawaii are the only ones I have missed.
I went to Boise for LA Tech's H-Bowl game against QB Woody Dantzler and Clemson. We lost 49-24. It snowed like hell in the 1st half. Could hardly see the field for the snow coming down. Cold as I've ever been in my life. But....LA Tech fans turned out in pretty good numbers because we were WAC champions. Also, and because we shared the WAC with Boise St, there were a lot of Boise St fans who wore "Tech" blue that day and cheered for Tech against Clemson. So, it made it difficult to tell exactly how many Tech fans were in attendance.
BTW, there were a ton of Clemson fans in town too, spending all those greenbacks stamped with Clemson Tiger "paws" on them. LOL! They said that was Clemson's way of letting the locals know how much money they were spending in their town.
That's actually a great ideal send out a stamp of your teams's mascot or "WKU' to all season ticket holders and have them to stamp the money they spend. Now no one pays in cash or very little do so the impact would be limited

Yep....the year was 2001, so the world was still a little more dependent on cash back then.

When we used to go to the SoCon basketball tourney in Asheville NC, Marshall fans all took $2 bills. Absolutely flooded the place with those bills. They knew we were there for sure.

We have been blessed to be more geographically aligned with a lot of good bowl games. But the statistics show that when we were sent to far flung bowl games, our fan base purchased tickets anyway and donated them to either Military Personnel or others. Also in addition to purchasing tickets, we draw pretty good tv ratings for a G5 school. Its two fold. We show up and people watch. Yes some of it is luck, but a lot of it is something else too.

Well, how about this! The TV numbers for the LA Tech vs Miami Independence Bowl game have been REVISED, and now they are saying the ratings were even better than initially reported! 2.77 MILLION people watched this year's game, up +36% over last years Indy Bowl. That's 400K more viewers than was initially reported on Jan 1st. Wow!!

Reflecting on it, it was nice to watch the Dawgs fair a whole lot better vs the U in that stadium than we did last time we played 'em there. That was back in 2002? or 2003? the first game after Miami lost that controversial NC game to Ohio State. Back then that Miami team smashed us 48-9. They were stacked with NFL talent.
Overall, this year's Indy Bowl was a good experience for Tech Football.
