I don't see ANYTHING weather related that should/could mess with flights. Some storms/wind, but nothing like a massive storm.

9:40 out of Weyers Cave, landing in DFW at 3:40, weather does look pretty bad at landing time but nothing pilots haven't landed in 1,000 times.

It’s high crosswinds that can be problematic. Above a certain threshold I believe they aren’t allowed to attempt landing. This is a combination of aircraft and airport limitations and airline policy. Boeing 737/777 top out around 35 knots demonstrated crosswind. Note, actual wind speed can be much higher head on, it’s the crosswind component that matters. If the airport has a variety of runway directions to choose from, that can help mitigate it, assuming the wind is in one direction and not swirling.

As long as the winds don’t stay very high for a long period of time it should be ok. The part that was a bit troubling was accuweather saying tornado like winds.

Tornado like winds?! Yeeesh. On the uptick... at least it didn't say "Sharknado like winds." We all would have been screwed.

I was just looking at the same thing. As long as it's dry, I think it will be fine. If the wind turns this into a run-heavy game of attrition along the lines, advantage Dukes.

My concern is just going to be getting there now. Friday looks like thunderstorms all night long.

Friday looks ugly all day long. I'm flying out of DCA in the morning and even I'm still worried about that forecast

9:40 Southwest? Thinking there will be lots of purple on that flight!

I know a lot of folks who will be on SWA leaving DCA at 1:30-ish. Purple-out. Fun fact: my buddy and I were on a similar SWA Fridayh afternoon flight going to our first Frisco game. My buddy hands the stewardess his credit card and tells her to buy anyone in purple who wants one a beer. I thought he was nuts. Nobody - not one person - took him/her up on it. I was shocked and disappointed - the plane was full of purple.

I don't suppose your buddy is flying late Friday this time? 04-cheers

I know nothing but when the landing airport says tornado's possible and large damaging winds I'm thinking flights might not be landing in Frisco. I hope the weather clears up some or we might not be making it down there. There is no margin for error with a 11am gametime.

And dont get me started on 60s and 70s all week and then low 40s and wind on Saturday. JMU is cursed with weather in Frisco 03-banghead

Just to clarify, I don’t think I saw any official NOAA/FAA weather products saying tornados (but also didn’t look). That is what the pilots and airports primarily rely on. Their ears may perk up if it’s in the news, but most aren’t going to accuweather to make decisions. They make those decisions a lot closer to flight time, and know how to interpret the raw weather data themselves.

You clearly know more about weather than I'll ever care too. That being said when weather.com and accuweather paint a somewhat grim picture has to increase the chances of the weather turning south on NOAA/FAA weather products (whatever those are).

I obviously hope you end up being right here.

Actually NOAA is the primary source of raw data everyone including weather.com and accuweather would use as inputs I believe. Those guys don’t have their own satellites etc to collect data that I know of. But they do apply their own methods to interpret that data, and the further out it is the more chance things will develop differently than they predict. Stuff further than 24 hours out isn’t seen as super reliable for flight.

I know a lot less than the airline guys, but it’s a big part of their training. They don’t use interpreted forecasts on news outlets. It’s a ways out and a lot of things could shift yet. That said, agreed that some of the current public forecasts don’t look great for Friday in terms of wind. I’m hoping that stuff is mostly associated with the thunderstorms and passes thru quickly so flights aren’t too impacted. DFW has runways at couple different headings, so that can mitigate it if the winds aren’t shifting too much. DAL has two parallel runways at the same heading, so could see some of those flights get redirected to DFW potentially, depending on what direction and how strong the winds are.

We’re on a Friday evening flight to DFW, so I’m potentially impacted too. A little bit uneasy about it, but not panicking yet.

If we do get diverted in the air and have to miss the game, hope we get sent to New Orleans. Ugh... the memory of O'Brian hurricanes circa 1993 spring break still makes me nauseous.

Ugh. Don't like what I'm seeing here for Friday, particularly the wind sheer. NOAA has issued severe weather advisory. Hope this changes. It is still early though, and the NOAA outlook shows Dallas TX as a 15% risk currently, it looks like the higher risk is a bit northeast.

Accuweather for Friday:

69 hi
32 lo
Thunderstorms, some severe; storms can bring downpours, large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado

I'm seeing some hourly forecasts for Saturday showing a high around 50 to 55, but that is 1 o'clock in the morning. The temp drops 20 degrees by 10 AM. Also seeing winds 20 MPH with gusts up to 30. Sucks if that's what we get.
