Quinnipiac & Norfolk State - Atlantic City Tournament
You led 6-0 but trail 33-32 at halftime. James Butler made only 1 of 6 field goals, but he has 7 rebounds and 4 assists. 4 assists ties his career-high. Okros leads all scorers with 9. Wynter has 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, but like Butler he didn't shoot well at 3-9.

Dragons win 72-63 to win their first game outside of the DAC since they won in Elon on 2/2/19.

A nice win over a team we should beat. The fact it was neutral I am sure helped our mentality. Nice contributions from folks other than Cam and Butler

RE: Quinnipiac
Norfolk State who is 4-9 knocked off Bowling Green who is 8-3 last night in overtime. So Drexel will likely have the easier opponent to face this afternoon in a chance to win the championship. In the state of Drexel Basketball today, wins mean a lot more than strength of schedule. So hopefully they can pull out another win today.

RE: Quinnipiac & Norfolk State - Atlantic City Tournament
Attendance was listed on the boxscore for both games last night at 500. Let's say that the idea of having 4 mid-major teams from fairly far away playing in Atlantic City on the Friday and Saturday before Christmas is an epic fail. They would have drawn more fans if the tournament were at the DAC. I think that family members and diehard fans from the other teams, if there are any, would rather be in Philadelphia than Atlantic City.

RE: Quinnipiac & Norfolk State - Atlantic City Tournament
Dragons are CHAMPIONS of Atlantic City tonight with a 53-49 win over Norfolk State. Looks like they lead 51-40 on a Zach Walton layup with 5:13 left but didn't score a basket the rest of the game, ans NFSU fought back to make the game close.

Dragons win despite shooting just 32% from the field. Leading scorers were Butler and Green with just 10 points each. Tim Perry is back in the rotation for Drexel so that could be a big boost off of the bench if he can stay healthy.

So they finished up the OOC schedule at 7-6 (6-6 vs. DI). I'd say that's OK but not great. Fortunately the season starts over on Saturday afternoon with 3 straight home game to start the CAA slate.

I also saw $25 for the cheapest ticket...$40 along the sidelines. Wasn’t going anyway but that’s like flushing money down the toilet. It also said $25 to park on the web site.

What happened to the Philly hoop group classic? That was pretty good. I think they got uva in it one time.

We actually had tentative plans to go and even stay overnight, as it would be a rare excuse for us to go to Atlantic City. But after factoring in the way that the team had been playing recently, the costs, and the freezing cold weather, we just decided that it just wasn't worth it, considering that I watch enough games throughout the year at the DAC. Drexel has had some memorable tournaments over the years such as their 3 trips to Madison Square Garden. I didn't think this would match the memories.

DU was the designated home team for both games and wore the whites, and the table crew for the tournament was provided by DU as well....so sort of home games....

Neither NSU or Bowling Green were necessarily "easier" opponents. Their game last night was a classic rock fight. Both are quick, athletic teams that played hard-nosed ball that the officials allowed. Today's game was likely going to be dictated by how tight it was called and that turned out to be the case. DU played well defensively and kept NSU away from the game i saw them play last night. Was surprised about their record when i saw it. They looked like a better team that the record would suggest, but I suspect how the games are called affects them.

That attendance figure to me was very generous. BG did have a lot of fans since they have a local guy as a major player. They had the most fans over the two days. An "interestingly" run tournament and venue. Today's game had NO event staff. The officials had to move the warm up ball cart of the floor when we pointed out that it was still sideline midcourt. No one to mop wetness on the floor, etc.

Was also glad that I showed up yesterday just before 2:00 for the 4:30 game to check the table set up. Daktronics unit very similar to the DAC with one MAJOR flaw....the shot clock reset handheld only had one button that reset the shot clock to 30 seconds, no way to reset to 20 at all. Fortunately I had the venue event person's cell number. Had a little difficulty explaining that it was a rather large problem. The first suggestion was to just use the control panel to reset it. I laughed and said there was no way that would work. Eventually it was discovered that there was a package that hadn't been opened..The correct handheld was in place maybe 30 minutes prior to tip-off. No idea what would have happened if it hadn't been found......

Like I said, interesting tourney, but I did like the way the horn sounded in Boardwalk Hall....

Sounds to me like there are so many little nuances that go into preparation of an official college basketball game, and the Atlantic City people just thought that you could just set up a court, baskets, and scoreboards and be fine. I'm still not sure what the purpose of it was. I guess maybe they thought that they could sell a few extra hotel rooms? Also, with the MAAC Tournament is in Atlantic City in March, and I wonder if any of their staff was in attendance, using these games as a trial run?

The tournament was set up by an outside company. AC and Boardwalk Hall (as far as I know) had nothing to do with creating or organizing things, just addressing some on-site things that they were contracted for, I would assume. I did bring up the MAAC tourney to them and they'd need to be sure fix the set up for them. Was told the MAAC brings in all their own equipment. The venue should be OK with games since the A-10 held their tournies there for several years before moving to Brooklyn. Boardwalk Hall facilities were fine, at least the areas I had access to. Nice Media Room (where we saw NO media present for any of the games) that the table crew used.

I think it all boiled down to how much the organizers were willing to pay out for support services. Friday there were a few around, but not yesterday. Avoiding weekend/overtime charges? Pretty bad when the officials need to move the ball cart off the floor and towel the floor a few times.

I suspect they got a decent group room rate from the Trop since a normal Friday night stay at this time of year was probably light. (Nice rooms BTW...recommend the Trop if anyone is so inclined to visit the casinos).

RE: Quinnipiac & Norfolk State - Atlantic City Tournament
Beating Norfolk State was nice. When we were up double digits I wish we would have buried them, just like they did our NCAA hopes last time we played them. But it is still nice to win a tournament, regardless of the competition. Still nice to win 2 consecutive games away from home. Hopefully the lends us well heading into CAA play. Having TPJ will be a big boost for us, or so I would hope. CAA is wide open with W&M?!?!?! looking like the best team currently.

I would classify it as expected. The only game that really went awry was UMBC. That was a game we should have won, and we got absolutely blown out. La Salle was a toss up that also did not go our way. Overall it went as expected IMO. Our close games against Temple and Rutgers stand out as positives.

Temple is 8-3 with their only losses to #5 Maryland, Missouri and Miami (Fl). They beat Texas A&M, USC and Davidson.

Rutgers is 9-3 with losses to Pitt, #11 Michigan State and St Bonnies. They have wins over Wisconsin and #22 Seton hall.

You host Charleston, UNCW, and Delaware. Then on Thursday January 9 you play at Towson in the first game of a CAA doubleheader on CBS Sports Network. Starting 3-1 or better would make you an early contender. CAA games 7 through 10 are hard hosting W&M and going to Northeastern, Hofstra, and Delaware. You host Hofstra and Northeastern in the second-to-last week and end at Charleston. After a 9-0 (8-0 vs. Division I) start, Delaware has beaten winless Delaware State and lost three of their last four. With a lot of teams packed together, there will be many game between two teams who could win the regular season title. Towson's only Top 200 NET win was their last game against Tulane, and they host Northeastern and Hofstra and go to Charleston.
