What are esports and should W&M Have a Team?
One of the biggest topics in the sports industry today is esports. Like it or not folks, competitive video gaming is here to stay.

The amount of eyeballs and money involved continues to grow exponentially year-over-year; as such, we had to dive deeper.

To do so, we enlisted our good friend Jesse Hecht, who is currently a Director at the Electronic Gaming Federation -- he's certainly a subject matter expert in the space.

Enjoy our Q&A with Jesse on the topic below, and LET'S GO TRIBE.

I think if we want to have a gaming club or whatever that's all well and good, students can make clubs on their own as they please. I don't think any sort of esports thing should be run through an athletic department or even be a club sport under the rec.

I get what you're saying.. and my getting older self has similar gut feelings...

But this stuff is aired on ESPN and the like, so I don't think it's a totally crazy idea.

ESPN also airs the hot dog eating contest, the national spelling bee, bowling, world series of poker...

Let's not forget professional cornhole. Watching the pros is awe inspiring. One of the top guys is a former JMU football player.

Bowling is actually an NCAA-sanctioned sport. I'm surprised more schools don't sponsor it. (Are bowlers athletes? That's a question for another thread).

JMU will not be immune. Somewhere there is data indicating how many students spend how much time playing Esports outside any school sponsored organization. The numbers will show the activity is growing faster than football participation and attendance. Is naive to think Esports participation and viewing won’t compete for students’ discretionary time with real world athletic events, in Williamsburg and Harrisonburg.
