Having games OTA is a big bonus for a true core cutter like me! Now if Stadium is allowed to show tier 3 games OTA then that’s even a bigger bonus!

Now if we need to get details on the LA bowl, everything will be settled for the MW for the next 6 years.

not sure exactly how many OTA games there are. Sounds like only 3 are required(the 3 from CBS).

With the MWC moving from ESPN the worldwide leader will likely hold onto their BYU property. That and half the P12 are the primary late night inventory they have now unless they want to make central time zone teams play really really late

That already was done I think 2-3 weeks ago???

MWC TV deal with Fox Sports and CBS
(01-09-2020 06:13 PM)quo vadis Wrote:  Wow .... this is a slam-dunk for the MWC. More money than anyone thought they'd get and excellent exposure. And only tied in for six years.

By my reckoning, this is $3.75m per school if Hawaii is in the deal, $4.1m per school if not, either way even more than the very good $3.5m that SBJ reported last month, which some AAC fans claimed was surely exaggerated.

I think any talk of Boise or anyone else going to the AAC has vanished.

I also admit to being wrong - I thought that the long delay in getting the deal done was bad news, and meant a bad deal, for the MWC.

Considering it’s a shorter time period that pay is probably more competitive than the contract averages would suggest Vs the AAC deal. Remember almost all these deals are escalating year after year so the fall 2020-spring 2026 years would average less than the published averages for the AAC deal since the heavier 2026-2030+ years won’t be included.

They reached a deal. I’m talking more general strategy. It’s why I was going to be surprised if they folded the Cougars into any G5 league or tried to lowball them. They make strategic sense in that tv window as one of two non-P12 teams that draw decent in that late window over the years.

It's more than a decent deal; it's a great deal and it's a deal that will be revisited in 5 years and not be locked in for 12 years like the AAC.

CBS is trying to stay in college football "on the cheap".

I would think 1 of the 3 games CBS would air yearly would be Army/Navy @ Air Force.

Yes, AAC fans are trying to use tepid words like 'nice' and 'decent' when in reality its a better deal than the AAC got relative to expectations.

A few years back, CBS moved an Air Force@ Navy game and a Navy@AF from CBSSN to OTA CBS. Each did about a million and a half viewers.

We'll see.

I am not sure going from games on networks everyone gets to one where only 56% of households gets and for less than half the money is considered a better deal based on expectations. Most MW fans think they are as good or better than the American. Now, most of the MW schools will be closer to my alma mater Charlotte and CUSA in exposure and money than the members of the American.

Its funny but every FBS conference thinks they are better than or equal to the AAC. For every MWC fan there is someone from the MAC or SBC saying they would whip the best schools in the AAC more often than not.

“The six-year term was the maximum length the MW was willing to agree to, Thompson said.

"We feel the next five years are going to bring change in the market, perhaps significantly, from both a technology and distribution perspective," he said. "In addition, a significant number of major rights deals will expire during this period of time, especially in the collegiate rights market.

"It was more important to us that once the dust settles from this period of change, we have all our inventory available to take advantage of any of those changes in the marketplace."“

Well the AAC will only be halfway when a lot of deals expire.

Of course, all the time slots could be locked up and nobody would be interested in the MWC at that time.

Still, it looks like a reasonable bet.

With a 3% escalation, the AAC deal is still 6.3 million a year over the first 6 years, so its still notably higher.

RE: MWC TV deal with Fox Sports and CBS
I think the point is the bubble has not popped yet. Conferences came out far better than most thought in the discussion over the past few years.

BYU - looks to be in the MWC and AAC TV area of TV money
Liberty - Picked up by ESPN and included in bowl pool
AAC, MWC, SB and MAC improved over their current sitiuations. CUSA is the only way I am not sure about.
ARMY now along with Boise part of CBS package.
FOX looks to be trying to build FS1 and FS2 with more games with getting rid of the regionals.
ACC Network happened
ESPN+ Contracts happened

Things look pretty stable right now until about 2023 when the talks start around 23/24 on what happens next. I do think the NCAA Meetings in January will be interesting. I think the Divisions rules will likely be discussed now that the waiver was granted for AAC.

To me the old "exposure in households" thing is circa 2012 talk, when everyone was concerned about NBCSN vs ESPN eyeballs in households and the like and streaming was nothing. But via apps and websites anyone can get the games on CBSSN or FS2 if they want to subscribe and most people who want them - college football fans - have those channels on cable anyway. I have them without even trying to.

And the money is clearly better relative to expectations than the AAC deal. The AAC deal is for the bottom end of what most thought they'd get, the MW money is at the top end, or maybe beyond the top end. I didn't see anyone saying they'd get anything near $4m a school.

UConn left the AAC in part over unhappiness with their deal. Wake me up when anyone leaves the MW over this deal.

Financially, it looks like a very good deal. The MWC will be the only FBS conference without an ESPN contract, the only FBS conference not televised on the ESPN family of networks. That ends the Boise State-ESPN relationship, which has worked well for both. It will be interesting to see how the new relationships work out.

It's not for football, but the Big East has done well despite not being on the ESPN family of networks.

The main thing that fans/observers need to take into account is that the ratings are inherently going to be lower on FS1 (and even more so on CBSSN) compared to ESPN. Getting a 1.0 rating on ESPN is much different compared to getting a 1.0 rating on FS1 and people in the industry understand the difference when comparing conferences. (I roll my eyes every time that I see a post that Conference X is getting way higher ratings on ESPN compared to Conference Y on FS1 or another sports network because it's just not an apples-to-apples comparison. You can clearly see the difference with the leagues that split packages between ESPN and Fox, such as the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12.)

The other thing is that if ESPN is going to get the current CBS package of SEC games, then that's going to have a very large impact on what's getting shown on the ESPN mothership versus ESPN2/ESPNU/etc. A lot of games that may have been on ESPN in recent years are going to get pushed to ESPN2 and, in turn, games that have been ESPN2 are going to get pushed to ESPNU. That's almost certainly going to impact the G5 leagues like the MWC the most, so the exposure on the ESPN linear networks was likely going to get reduced for any non-P5 league, anyway.

ESPN+ is a way better streaming platform than the CBS All Access streaming platform is you're a sports fan, though. The MWC potentially sending games to CBS All Access (as they're being coy about CBS putting those games on either a linear channel or streaming) is a definite downgrade. Frankly, unless the exclusive streaming games are on ESPN+, Amazon (which does limited sports) or Netflix (which does no live sports at all), I don't think it's worth much for a sports league at all outside of simply giving exposure to games that wouldn't have been shown on a linear channel, anyway.

Dennis Dodd reports the same, and that the stated numbers are "not close" to being accurate.

That's right because they are so much better.
