i wish mckie, dawkins, jank and haith were better recruiters

ucf, tulsa, smu all have a decent core coming back..all are just missing that 1 big piece to take them to the next level...add a touted big or guard to any of their next years squads and theyd look top 25 legit..

temple is the one team i cant convience myself theyll be better next year, they arent even losing much..they just arent bringing in anyone touted and rely on seniors heavily

We’re all hoping our sitting transfers, Keyshawn Embery-Simpson and Curtis Heywood, will be part of the missing pieces. We’re hoping they can add to our athleticism and provide consistent scoring and shooting. We also hope Haith can land a good big man to replace Igbanu next year. If we can even keep our inside game on the level it is this year I think we will be better next year because most of our players will be back and our freshman point will be a year older and a year better. It’s 21-22 where we are likely to have issues. The core of this team Horne, Rachal, Joiner, Jackson, etc are all juniors. After next season we will be replacing 6-8 players.

That's one good thing about Gragg choking on the waivers.

It appears Jones is gone. So we will lose five with Ugboh leaving. We will have a junior point in Hill, junior KES and Heywood, if Brown follows through he will be senior. That's not a terrible drop off, the incoming freshman from Illinois looks solid and will be a sophmore so probably a solid bench guard at that point. Stepping out on limb it is likely we may have a Bryce Thompson or Trey Phipps lol maybe even both as redshirt sophomores coming off sitting out a year. It seems to be a continuing theme that the kids are leaving and then rethinking that when they actually get somewhere. Haith and Seals have done a good job of keeping the door open with kids.

RPI for reference

NET | RPI
26 | 29 Memphis
30 | 25 Wichita State
36 | 36 Houston
63 | 50 Cincy
72 | 71 SMU
79 | 59 Temple
85 | 105 Tulsa
88 | 121 UCONN
117 | 113 UCF
127 | 177 Tulane
139 | 183 USF
241 | 250 E Carolina

For the most part the NET vs RPI is better for the league.

This seems to be Temple’s MO in recent years, win some big games OOC, build some buzz, then fall back to the middle of the pack in conference. Any idea why this has become a recurring theme? Coaching? Injuries?

This pattern has been due, in part, to wear and tear on Temple's starting units as each season progressed. Coach Fran Dunphy usually played his starters 150 to 160 mpg, with the bench rarely playing more than 50 minutes.

This season, new Coach McKie's approach from the start was to go with a deeper rotation. This strategy worked quite well in the OOC games, although numerous players had injuries that limited their playing time. When Jake Forrester received his waiver from the NCAA for game #5, it helped to offset some of these injuries. However, even with his availability to play, the team at times wasn't able to go with more than an 8 or 9 man rotation, with some players playing less effectively due to injuries.

A major reason for Temple's struggles in early conference games was a severely scratched cornea, sustained by Nate Pierre-Louis, one of the team's two best players. He was forced to wear protective goggles, and his scoring declined significantly. He has only played 1 game without the goggles, thus far.

Another issue for the team in the past few years is that a few players, each season, have underperformed and played less effectively as each season has unfolded. This season, three of Temple's current or former starters (Moorman, A. Moore, Hamilton) have been less effective than expected, or have played inconsistently, or have become less effective during conference play. Hamilton's minutes have been cut in half, and A. Moore's have been cut by ~ 8 mpg, but Moorman has continued to play ~ 26 mpg thus far.

As far as coaching is concerned, HC McKie got off to a great start and was rarely out-coached. However, he is the youngest HC in the AAC, and is at somewhat of a disadvantage against the many fine coaches in the conference. He's working his way through the learning curve that every rookie HC has to go through.

My problem with it, and the rpi is the committee will use it as they see fit. They'll use against teams in the AAC, but they'll dismiss it for their sacred cows like Kentucky. Isn't Kentucky around 60?

Memphis is projected a 7 seed right now, Net 26. Kentucky at NET 60 should be on the bubble then. Lunardi has them as a 5 seed. They should be a 15 seed. It's bull ****.

I think Kentucky is certainly good enough to be at least a 5 seed, but if they go by the letter of the law, why aren't they a 15 seed?

04-cheers my mistake. I thought Haywood had 3 years of eligibility left. Even so it's not a terrible drop. Not a oh we will be fine either. Jones has made a reappearance so we may have to wait to see how it all shakes out.

Honestly, I think the cut Jones loose as a graduate transfer after this season. Our guard / wing lineup is going to be crowded next year with: Joiner, Hill, Jackson, KES, Williams, Haywood, Rachal, Gendron. Conversely we will only have 4 true frontcourt players: Early, Ugboh, Horne, and Brown

Yup, I see us signing a big, freshman or JC. That's where we have a gap, losing falckoun (sp) last year to injury and eventually totally kind of threw us off as did not one of the other bigs working out.

temple is the one team i cant convince myself theyll be better next year, they arent even losing much..they just arent bringing in anyone touted and rely on seniors heavily

Valid observation. In order to be better next season, Temple would have to replace Quinton Rose and Alani Moore with equally or more effective players, while bolstering the productivity of their front court.

Temple's recruiting plunged after a series of sub-par seasons under McKie's predecessor, and their record this season may not be helpful.

Notably, Temple has an opening for the 2020-21 season, as well as five openings for the class of 2021. The 6 athletes that McKie will attempt to recruit will be crucial to his future coaching career at Temple.

On the positive side:

Coach McKie played a key role in recruiting Temple's best players, such as Shizz Alston. McKie helped to offset Dunphy's recruiting deficit.

McKie brought transfer PF Jake Forrester aboard from Indiana this season, and Forrester is now one of Temple's most effective players.

He also brought Monty Scott aboard. After struggling the first half of the season, Scott has begun to play much more effectively, averaging 19 points in the past two games. If he can maintain this level of play next season, the team's 2020-21 prospects will improve.

Newcomers Arashma Parks and Josh Pierre-Louis have shown signs of significant upside potential, as has Damian Dunn (in pre-season play, prior to a season-ending foot injury).

--------------

Best-case scenario for 2020-21:

1. Nate Pierre-Louis returns to form (pre-season 2019-20 AAC second team, most improved player award in 2019), after recovering fully from severely scratched cornea. PROSPECTS: LIKELY.

2. Tai Strickland (Wisconsin transfer PG) and Josh Pierre-Louis (backed up by two combo guards) become more productive players than Alani Moore II has been at PG position. PROSPECTS: LIKELY.

3. CG Monty Scott and SF DeVondre Perry, backed up by newcomers Dunn, Ademokoya, and White, play effectively enough to offset the loss of Quinton Rose at the Wing position. PROSPECTS: UNCERTAIN.

4. The team's play at the #4 position, with PF JP Moorman, in tandem with 1-2 other forwards (Perry, Hamilton) improves. PROSPECTS: POSSIBLE.

5. The team's play at the #5 position, with PF Forrester (starter), in tandem with 1-2 other forwards (Hamilton & Parks) improves, with Forrester's minutes increasing to ~30 mpg. PROSPECTS: SOMEWHAT LIKELY.

SUMMARY:

Temple may improve at the #1, #2, and #5 positions, with some possibility of improvement at the #4 position. The team's scoring potential and overall play, may be affected by the loss of senior co-captain Quinton Rose.

Whether or not the possible improvements at the #1, #2, and #5 positions can offset the loss of Quinton Rose will depend in large measure on the ability of Jake Forrester and Monty Scott to build on their improved play this season, and on improvements by NPL, JPL, Parks, Hamilton, and hopefully even JP Moorman.

In addition, the team will need DeVondre Perry to play as well next season as he played in the team's first 11 2019-20 OOC games.

The team might also get a boost if some of their incoming athletes (CG/PGs Dunn, Ademokoya, White, and a transfer/JUCO/late recruit TBD by June 1st) become significant contributors by January, 2021).

Temple's play may get a boost from the leadership of the team's five seniors with their last chance to make a splash in post-season play, and from the benefits of a full season's learning curve by Coach McKie.

Depending on how the team's sophomores and juniors finish this season, Temple may be a projected pre-season 7th, 8th, or 9th place AAC team in 2020-21.

If they are able to play up to their full ability level, and if they stay healthier than they've been this season, they could possibly contend for 4th or 5th place and a NIT bid.

If one or two players "blow up" and surpass all expectations, anything might be possible, but for now, a 20-win season and NIT trip would be considered a success in Coach McKie's second season.

Equally important for Temple will be the quality of the 6-player recruiting class that Coach McKie will recruit for the 2020 & 2021 classes.
