Surprising that St. Cloud St. would. Crookston is pretty small.

Found this

https://www.inforum.com/sports/football/...p-football

"Midco Sports Network's David Brown is reporting St. Cloud State head football coach Scott Underwood confirmed a 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, meeting with school administration."

That's in half an hour

Such a shame, considering that both schools were on the verge of being invited to join the Great Northern FBS conference. 07-coffee3

RE: St Cloud State, UM-Crookston dropping football
It appears that the NSIC is no longer mandating the sponsorship of football. So those schools are free to drop it, provided they continue to sponsor a minimum number of sports to maintain NSIC membership. Although that may not matter to Crookston, who may be rumored to be headed to the North Star league of the NAIA.

UPDATE: TV has picked up the story:

Hockey is expensive. A non-revenue sport with high overhead paid the price.

If true, that makes three 4-year schools that have dropped the sport this year. I might be missing some. I wonder if this is the beginning of quite a few more doing so.

If your main sport (Hockey) is already DI and you don't have the football expense any more, why NOT go D-I?

People joke, but that probably should be the long-term goal for both them and Duluth. Conference Dakotas makes plenty of sense if you don't have to find somewhere to stash a football team and they actually have a decent conference tournament in basketball.

St. Cloud State to drop football, men's and women's golf, add men's soccer starting in 2020. To be Title IX compliant.

Guess what sport the Summit League needs a member in to stay NCAA compliant...

None. They have 6 in Baseball.

They could start sponsoring Men's Hockey of FCS Football (given they have 5 already and both Tarleton State and Dixie State are sitting there homeless). Members would be compelled to join as they have no choice when their conference sponsors a sport.

The Summit needs 6 for football. But would they get an autobid with two transitioning programs?

They need TWO teams sports other than Basketball.

Baseball is one, and it will have 5 members next year.

Men's Soccer is the other. Soccer is nominally ok now (6 with UMKC joining and IPFW leaving) but one is an affiliate.
St. Cloud also has baseball, which is short on team after IPFW leaving.

St. Cloud solves both issues.

They are not breaking up the MVFC to then add Dixie and Tarleton.

Summit League football will not happen.

St. Cloud State is one of the better D2 football schools. Dropping a sport that makes more money than the other sports is not the smartest moves. I would have dropped the hockey team and keep football and go to D1. At least you make money from bodybag games in football playing FBS schools.

Cincinnati Christian, Jacksonville, St. Cloud State and Minn.-Crookston dropped football this year and 2 North Dakota NJCAA schools dropped as well.

Hockey is the soul of Minnesota. St. Cloud State would never do that
